Shayn Csatlos' conviction comes after she was charged with second-degree murder and felony child abuse in 2020, more than a year after the infant's death. Her four-day trial finished this week.
According to the news release, the infant, whose name was N.W., stopped breathing at the child care facility run out of Csatlos' home on Perrel Street on Sept. 17, 2019.
After Csatlos called 911, medics began life-saving efforts and brought the infant to the hospital. He died three days later, having suffered a brain bleed, broken fingers, bruising, a black eye and retinal hemorrhages.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Csatlos began caring for the infant in August 2019. At the time, the boy was "a happy, healthy baby," the Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney's Office said.
However, under Csatlos' care, he became fussier and had to be picked up on two separate occasions due to vomiting and fussiness. He went to the hospital both times.
After the boy's death, Csatlos gave different accounts of what happened but couldn't explain why N.W. became unconscious in her care. According to the Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, the stories she told investigators changed and weren't consistent.
During the trial, prosecutors provided testimony from several CHKD physicians involved in the boy's treatment, as well as child abuse pediatricians, the medical examiner and a neuropathologist. They all diagnosed N.W. as having suffered abusive head trauma.

Prosecutors said the baby suffered multiple brain bleeds that caused his death while staying at the daycare.
