A 21-year-old woman was found guilty on Tuesday for all 17 charges she faced in relation to the abuse of the child she was babysitting.
According to prosecutors, Carly Webb abused a 19-to 23-month-old child between Oct. 2023 and Jan. 2024, causing no physical injury but still engaging in abusive behavior.
The defense argued that the child was never harmed and that Webb’s actions did not show "reckless disregard for human life."
The child's parents testified that Webb was a close family friend, whom they wholly trusted with their daughter. They told the court that they packed the child meals, as well as multiple drinks each day; however, when they came home, the child acted hungry.
They testified that they saw no physical injuries, so they didn't suspect anything until Webb made an offhand comment about their daughter liking a chair so much that she sat in it for hours. They thought that was odd, so they checked their security camera and saw months of abuse.
The courtroom watched surveillance footage showing Webb yelling at the child, taunting and mocking her, withholding food, hitting her with toys, kicking, leaving her in a crib all day, and at one point, putting the sobbing child in a cardboard box.
Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney, Stacey Stickney, showed the court video of Webb concealing and throwing away food and drink meant for the child, occasionally eating the food in front of the girl. She argued that for months, on multiple days, the child was deprived of food, water or something to drink the entire day, under Webb's care.
The prosecution also showed video of Webb going back and forth to the refrigerator, as the child sat in her crib, alone. Webb, who arrived at the home between 6:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. each day as the child was sleeping, would sometimes leave the child in her bedroom until 4 p.m., once leaving the child in her crib for 21 hours.
Webb's defense attorney then argued that her actions, while "disturbing" and "abhorrent," did not meet the standard for a guilty conviction; however, the judge disagreed, finding her guilty on all counts.
