Jeremiah Morfin, 15, is behind bars after investigators said he killed his cousin. Newly released documents show gut-wrenching details about how a missing persons call turned into a murder investigation.

The call for a missing child from a home in Southwest Albuquerque came in around 3 a.m. Saturday.

The documents state the homeowner is Morfin's mother, who went to check on her son and niece having a sleepover. She told investigators she saw the back door open, the front door locked and her son cleaning his room and doing laundry, but most importantly, she noticed a girl, her niece, was not in the home.

She told an Albuquerque police officer she left the home and started driving around looking for the missing girl, identified in the documents only as A.M. When she got back to the home, she said she was greeted with a note from her son, Morfin.

Documents state the note indicated that he was angry and killed A.M. The documents also state the teen told an officer he "kind of lost it" and "I did something bad."

The officer asked where A.M. was, and Morfin directed APD officers to an arroyo in the area of Silver Tree Drive and Blake Southwest. That is where the girl's lifeless body was found.

APD officers described seeing visible trauma to the girl's head and chest and said that they are not ruling out a possible sexual assault.

The state is pushing to keep a 15-year-old accused of murdering his young cousin, locked up until trial.

Police say Morfin led officers to the girl's body in a nearby arroyo, where there were signs she had been beaten and sexually assaulted.

Monday, Morfin's case was forwarded to District Court where a judge will decide whether he stays behind bars.

Albuquerque police lapel video shows how officers found the body of a 9-year-old girl whose teen cousin has been charged with her murder.

The video, shot on Jan. 5, shows Jeremiah Morfin, then 15, telling police where he hid his cousin Aaliyah's body.

The video also shows him admitting to an officer that he "lost it," and saying, "There were so many things that happened. It was boiling up inside. I let it go and I did something bad."

Officers asked Morfin where she was and he led them to an arroyo near Silver Tree Park in southwest Albuquerque.

Lapel video shows officers navigating a dark drainage ditch by the arroyo, where they found the girl's body wrapped in a blanket. Court records said she had bruises on her body and had bled from her ear and nose.

Morfin has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, child abuse resulting in death, and tampering with evidence.

He has had numerous court appearances since January, including one where lawyers requested a competency test.
Video is upsetting

Fuck this kid. I feel bad for his family and his dead cousin who did nothing to deserve this. Fucking tragic.

I missed that she was only 9. NO WAY IN HELL I'd allow her 15yo male cousin to stay the night.

It was the fifteen year olds house, and his mother had her nine year old niece spend the night. I’ve done the same, because who in the fuck would ever suspect their own child would do such a heinous thing? No one.

We here at the Demon knows the many horrors that can occur between strangers and families.

The mother of this teen boy as far as we know had no inkling that her son could do this.

Both mothers have lost children

One has had her life forever changed and filled with what ifs

And one will suffer knowing that a child she loved was capable of killing

another child that she loved.

It’s kind of like saying your 14 year old son can’t live in the same house as your 9 year old child. If your sister had to work late she might ask you to watch her child overnight. Most people wouldn’t say no. Now allowing them to sleep in the same room? No. Why would anyone do that?

A teen accused of murder was back in court.

Jeremiah Morfin was arrested in January, accused of killing his 9-year-old cousin. Police say Morfin led officers to her body in an arroyo where authorities say there were signs she had been beaten.

Morfin is being tried as an adult. On Tuesday, Judge Daniel Gallegos decided that Morfin is competent to stand trial.

Prosecutors in the case against Jeremiah Morfin, who is accused of murdering his nine-year-old cousin, are working to tack on new charges.

The amendment included criminal sexual penetration of a minor, attempted criminal sexual penetration of a minor, and criminal sexual contact. They say in January of 2019, Jeremiah Morfin, who was 15 at the time, beat his cousin to death and sexually assaulted her but previously he was never charged with rape.

The prosecution spent all day trying to convince a judge there’s enough probable cause for these charges but the defense argued the evidence doesn’t back it up. Jose Herrera, Jeremiah’s mother’s ex-boyfriend, was one of five people who testified on Monday. He testified that the nine-year-old girl had come over for a sleepover and disappeared in the middle of the night.

Police say when they got there, Morfin led them to her body in a nearby arroyo. She was found unclothed from the waist down and wrapped in a blanket - his DNA was found on the girl’s body

Jeremiah Morfin, the 15-year-old who admitted to killing his 9-year-old cousin will serve at least 85% of his sentence. Earlier this year, Morfin pled guilty to murdering the girl during a sleepover in 2019 when he was 15. He eventually led police to her body and there were signs she was badly beaten and sexually assaulted.
As part of that plea deal, Morfin was sentenced to 25 years. His defense asked for him to be eligible for parole after serving half of his sentence if he behaves himself in prison. The judge kept the parole eligibility at 85% considering the violent nature of the crime. “9-year-olds do not die at the hands of their 15-year-old cousin on a regular basis. This is rare, this is…grotesque,” said Judge Courtney Weaks.

If he is released after serving 85% of his sentence he will be 35 years old.

I know for certain that my Mother would have never allowed this, because she and my stepdad went through a period of freaking out if my stepbrother and I ended up in the same place alone, like the den where the "kid's TV" was. I probably would have though, in my "everyone has the best intentions and deserves the benefit of the doubt" way of thinking. And in this case, I would have been dead wrong too. This is too tragic to bear... :(
