A man is behind bars in Cleveland County, accused in the murder of a 2-year-old boy family has identified as Rhymell Ahari Collins.
Taylon Armando Peeler, 21, was arrested and booked on murder charges Tuesday. Police say the arrest came after the 2-year-old was airlifted to Levin Children’s Hospital from Kings Mountain Hospital due to severe injuries.

Rhymell Ahari Collins’ father, Shymell Collins, tells WBTV his son died at Levine Children’s Hospital Monday. He said his son was beaten by Taylon Peeler.
According to Shymell Collins, the child was beaten by Peeler while the child’s mother was at work. The father says when the mother returned home, Rhymell was unresponsive.

Shymell Collins told WBTV that Peeler was in a relationship with Rhymell’s mother.

The 21-year-old man spoke softly when addressed by the court.
“I’ve never been to court,” he said at one point.
According to a corrections officer, Peeler began to cry as he left the court room.

Rhymell Ahari Collins and his family will never get the chance to celebrate his 3rd birthday.

The toddler died after allegedly being hit so hard in the head by Taylon Armando Peeler that he died. Peeler is the boyfriend of Collins’ mother, Rottanae Hairston.
Collins’ mother noticed something was wrong with her son when she came home from work around 3 a.m. and found him acting out of character, read the warrants.

Peeler and Hairston drove the toddler to the hospital. By the time they got him there, the child was unresponsive.

Officers spoke with Hairston at the hospital. She reportedly told them that she left for work on Saturday, and Collins was acting normally. When she returned home, Peeler allegedly pointed out a bruise above Collins’ right eye. She had not noticed it before leaving for work.
As Collins fought for his life, investigators spoke with Peeler. Peeler did not confess to anything, but did state that he may have not been watching Collins as closely as he should have, according to investigators. He also told officers he had been smoking marijuana while watching the child, warrants said.

Police recovered a notebook belonging to Peeler, digital scales, several ashtrays with marijuana blunts in them, a grinder and a mason jar with marijuana in it, according to search warrants.
