Michael Dale Parks shot his wife in the head, killing her, before he decapitated her, dumped her body on a bridge and reported her missing, authorities said.

Parks, 44, was formally charged with murder and remains jailed without bond.

The victim was identified in court documents as Hope Parks. Her body was found Thursday morning on the bridge on C.R. 225W over Sugar Creek.

With investigators still at the bridge, Parks went to the Crawfordsville Police Department to file a missing person report.

Parks told police he hadn’t seen his wife since Aug. 18, when she left the house after an argument, according to a probable cause affidavit signed by Crawfordsville Police Det. Lt. David Long.

Parks gave the police consent to search the couple’s home, where officers noticed dried blood in multiple areas, including the garage, gravel driveway and rear deck of the home, Long said.

The woman’s head was found buried in the cellar, according to the affidavit.

Elsewhere in the home, investigators found a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition, and collected a spent casing from the yard, Long said. Another search turned up a bloodstained tarp that appeared to be used for transporting a body, Long added. The woman’s cell phone was located in a safe in the bedroom of the home.

An autopsy determined that Hope Parks died from a gunshot wound to the head. She had also suffered blunt force trauma to her chest and extremities, the medical examiner concluded.

The headless body of Hope Parks was found early Thursday on a bridge over Sugar Creek while Parks was reporting her missing at the Crawfordsville Police Department.
Parks told police he hadn’t seen his wife since Aug. 18, when she left the house after an argument. He said she drove off in a vehicle driven by an unknown person.

"The headless body of Hope Parks was found early Thursday on a bridge over Sugar Creek..."

This is one stupid, lazy wife killer - he left blood evidence all over the place at home and didn't bother to dump her body in the water? I guess he exhausted himself after hacking off her head, which he should've dumped off somewhere vs. burying it in his basement. This loser is dumber than dirt!

A west central Indiana man was sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing his wife, whose severed head was found buried in the basement of the couple's home.
Michael D. Parks, 46, was sentenced to the 50-year sentence called for under his plea agreement, with no time suspended. He will not be eligible for parole, the (Crawfordsville) Journal Review reported.

Hope Parks' headless body was found on Aug. 20, 2020, on a bridge as Parks was reporting her missing to Crawfordsville police. He told officers he had not seen her since she had left the house two days earlier after an argument and left in a vehicle driven by an unknown person.
But after officers found dried blood during a search of the couple's home and property, the woman's head was found buried in the basement. An autopsy found that Hope Parks died from a gunshot wound to the head.
