After responding to a home on Mill Road in the town of Rhinebeck January 22, New York State Police found Danielle C. DiStefano, 35, dead. Police say evidence on scene made it look as though DiStefano’s death may have been caused by suspicious circumstances.

Continued investigation led to the arrest of William H. Dicke, age 42, of Rhinebeck, for felony murder.

In the early morning hours of Monday, January 24, State Police arrested a Rhinebeck man for the murder of his girlfriend. The police believe the murder occurred either Friday night or Saturday morning.

Forty-two-year-old William Dicke is accused of murdering the woman and then waiting several hours to call the police to report a burglary. He left before the police arrived.

No additional information was immediately available.

The man accused of killing Danielle DiStefano appeared in Rhinebeck Court Thursday night in front of a capacity crowd. State and local police provided extra security for the preliminary hearing for the case against 42-year-old William Dicke.

Dicke was arraigned on a murder charge early Monday morning by Town of Milan Justice Richard Mattson. The judge remanded Dicke to the Dutchess County Jail.
The felony complaint filed by State Police Investigator Matthew Radewitz accuses Dicke of murdering 35-year-old DiStefano on Friday, January 21, at 11:45 p.m. at her residence. The complaint says in part that the two were “engaged in a domestic dispute which escalated to a physical altercation, that ended with the Defendant running over the victim with his motor vehicle.” It also says that after running her over, Dicke “left the victim alone in a gravely injured state displaying an utter disregard for the value of human life.”

William Dicke, convicted of murder and manslaughter for the January 2022 death of his girlfriend, Danielle Distefano, was sentenced to prison on Tuesday, March 7, 2023.

Dutchess County Court Judge Jessica Segal ordered the 43-year-old Rhinebeck resident to spend 25 years to life in prison on the murder conviction and a concurrent sentence of 7.5 to 15 years for the manslaughter conviction.
Dicke was accused of running over Distefano with a van during a domestic dispute on January 21, 2022, in Rhinebeck. The Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office alleged that Dicke then placed Distefano in her apartment, still alive, and staged the scene to hide the actual cause of death.

He was charged with murder for intentionally knowing that his actions would lead to her death. Alive and suffering from internal bleeding, the prosecution said he knew his actions would cause her death, which is why he was also charged with manslaughter.
Dicke, who showed no emotions during the trial, maintained his innocence. Speaking at his sentencing, he proclaimed, “I can’t show remorse for something I didn’t do.”
