Sentenced: Parkland Mom, Boyfriend Arrested After 2YO Girl's Death Ruled Homicide

Pierce County deputies arrested a mother and her boyfriend after a 2-year-old girl's death was ruled homicide.

Sheriff's deputies were called around 8:15 a.m. March 11 to a home in Parkland. First responders started life-saving measures on the child, but she died at the scene.

Deputies realized that there was a protection order in place between the man and two of the children in the home. The 29-year-old was arrested and booked into Pierce County Jail for third-degree assault of a child regarding a previous child abuse case.

Deputies also said there was an active Department of Children, Youth and Their Families (DCYF) investigation.

On March 12, the Pierce County Medical Examiner ruled the girl's death a homicide.

A day later, detectives interviewed the boyfriend and said authorities had probably cause to charge him and the child's mother. The 21-year-old was arrested later that day and booked into Pierce County Jail for investigation of homicide by abuse and murder.

No further details, including the suspects' identities, have been released.

A 2-year-old Parkland girl beaten to death by her parents within months of being returned by Child Protective Services has been identified.

Sarai Brooks died March 11 of blunt head trauma, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The little girl had bruising on her head and behind her ears, abrasions on her cheek, and lacerations inside her mouth and on her lower lip. Bruises were found on her face, arms, thigh, hands, buttocks and feet, records say.

She also had a possible hemorrhage on her spinal cord and the ““injuries observed on the victim were indicative of abuse,” according to court documents.

21-year-old Jharmaine Baker, and the father, 29-year-old Agustino Maile, are charged with second-degree murder in the girl’s death. Maile also is charged with homicide by abuse and a second count of second-degree murder.

Sarai and her two brothers were taken by CPS in April 2021 after they were found to have “significant injuries” and Baker was suspected of physically abusing her children, records say.

Baker told officials it was Maile who hurt the kids and that she did not intervene because she feared he would beat her as well.

A protection order issued last year was supposed to bar Maile from being close to the couple’s children, who was returned to Baker in late December.

Sarai was found dead on the floor of a hallway March 11 when a social worker stopped by to check in on the family.

Baker and Maile said they considered taking the toddler to the hospital the night before when she appeared to not be feeling well but opted not to “because they were afraid that the doctor would see the injuries on (the victim’s) arms, and they didn’t want further ‘allegations,’” prosecutors wrote in charging papers.

Detectives found bloody paper towels in the family’s apartment and bedding with stains from blood, urine and fecal matter. Police said it appeared all the bedding had been stripped before their arrival and hid in a closet.

Baker is being held on a $3 million bond, while Maile is being held on a $5 million bond.

The judge said neither is to have any contact with the other children they had been raising. Baker cried over video conference as the judge explained the seriousness of the charges, and his orders telling her: "Those orders mean absolutely no contact. None. Don’t wave your hand at your children. Don’t send them a birthday card."

Despite claims by Maile that the child was clumsy, and fell a lot, a medical examiner concluded that the child’s injuries were indicative of abuse, including blunt force trauma to the head. She also had cuts, abrasions and lacerations in various places along with bruising on her face, arms, sides, backside, hands and her feet.

The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide, indicating that the cause of death was some sort of blunt force trauma to her head between March 1–11.

Investigators learned that Maile and Baker had concerns about their daughter for at least a day before they called 911.

Baker’s phone was searched as part of the investigation, it unveiled that someone began googling various concerns starting on March 10 just after 9 p.m., and increased in seriousness up until a final search at 3:09 a.m. the following morning when someone searched "how to help a child wake up."

The call to 911 wasn’t made until March 12, when Baker told deputies that her child was on her back and that her lips had turned blue. After the girl died, the pair told investigators that they had discussed taking her to the hospital but didn’t out of concerns of "allegations."

Maile told deputies a number of incidents including slamming a door shut on the girl’s forearms, her hitting her head on a table, and dropping her—describing her as a clumsy child. However, he was still under that no-contact order which should have prevented him from being around to witness any of those moments. A medical examiner said the injuries didn’t match Maile’s story.

When the 2-year-old was first part of an investigation in April 2021, it was determined she had injuries to her head, face, sternum, abdomen, ears, inner thighs, backside and feet. A doctor at Seattle Children’s also noticed what appeared to be bite marks.

When ever I read that a woman failed to protect her kids because she was afraid of being beaten it makes me think they should get an even longer sentence than the piece of shit abuser.

There is never any excuse or justification that would allow anyone to sit back and watch a child be tortured and ultimately murdered.

Any SJW that thinks a parent knowing they failed their child or will never see that child again is the greatest punishment they can suffer can kiss my ass.

That fat fuck did NOT take any responsibility in his apology/non apology. The judge should have refused the plea and tried him for murder. And the skank mother is no better. Those sentences are a joke.
