Sentenced: Off-Duty Female Officer Fatally Shoots Woman After Finding Her With New Partner

A New York City police officer is in custody after she allegedly shot two women, killing one, at a home in Brooklyn.

The officer, who was off-duty at the time, is believed to have shot both women -- one of whom she was dating -- when they returned to the home where the officer's girlfriend lived.

Police said the off-duty officer shot a 24-year-old woman in her chest, "possibly more than one time," at the Bensonhurt home. The victim, identified as Jamie Liang, was taken to Maimonides Medical Center and was pronounced dead, police said.

The other woman, a 23-year-old, who was in the romantic relationship with the officer, was shot in the torso and is expected to survive, police said.

The suspect, 31, is a police officer in the 72nd District, which encompasses the Park Slope and Sunset Park areas of Brooklyn.

The officer had worked for the NYPD for 5 1/2 years. Police said she was at a local hospital for evaluation.

"We believe it is domestic in nature. We believe all three parties knew each other," Assistant Chief Michael Kemper, commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South, said at a press conference Wednesday evening.

"We believe they had an intimate relationship," he said of the officer and the 23-year-old woman.

The officer remained at the scene and told police she had shot the two women, according to police.

Police said they were still investigating, but recovered a gun on the scene and "there's a very good chance it is her service weapon," Kemper said.

The off-duty NYPD officer who allegedly shot her ex-girlfriend and killed the woman’s new lover may have snapped because she was clinging to hope that they’d get back together, a high-ranking police source told The Post Thursday.

Officer Yvonne Wu, 31, had recently split with her ex, Jenny Li, 23, but was still spending the night on occasion at Li’s home in Brooklyn — and may have lost it when she saw her there with another woman, the source said.

“She was still staying there on and off. She was still staying there some nights. It’s not that strange, maybe she thought it could still work out,” the source said.


Wu, who works at the 72nd Precinct and lives on Staten Island, allegedly opened fire on Li and her 24-year-old new lover, Jamie Liang, at the home Wednesday night, according to police.

“When the cops get there, she says, ‘I shot them both. The gun’s inside,’ calm as can be,” the source said.

Liang was found with a bullet wound to the chest and was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where she died. Li was in serious but stable condition on Thursday, police said.

Yvonne Wu, 34, admitted to the double-shooting in Brooklyn Supreme Court after she opened fire on her ex-girlfriend Jenny Li, 34, and her lover, Jamie Liang 24, on October 13, 2021.

Wu, who was off-duty at the time, injured Li and killed Liang, according to the New York Attorney General's Office.

She pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and second-degree attempted murder.

Wu will be held without bail until she appears in court for sentencing on August 28, Attorney General Letitia James said.

She agreed to the recommended 27 years behind bars- 22 for murdering Liang and five years for attempting to murder Li.

A former New York City police officer has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for shooting and wounding her ex-girlfriend and killing the ex-girlfriend's new love interest.

Former officer Yvonne Wu, 34, was sentenced Wednesday in state court in Brooklyn after pleading guilty in June to manslaughter and attempted murder for shooting Jenny Li and Jamie Liang.

Wu was off duty on Oct. 13, 2021, when she used her NYPD-issue gun to shoot Li, her former girlfriend, and Liang, Li's new partner. Liang was killed and Li survived with serious injuries.

“The moment was a living nightmare, having to watch a life being taken in front of my eyes and being able to do nothing about it,” Li said at the sentencing, according to the Daily News.

Li said she had to relearn how to walk and sit up after being shot, and her days have been filled with loss, anxiety and grief.

“Jamie, who is someone who had a whole life ahead of her, a wonderful daughter, and the most caring friend, has been taken — a decision that was no one’s to make,” Li said.

Wu apologized in court Wednesday.

“I want to say I’m sorry to everyone who’s been affected,” Wu said. “I’m so sorry. You guys will never forgive me and I’ll never forgive myself.”
