The Bristol County District Attorney says a baby found along a New Bedford walking path died between one and four weeks before it was discovered. Initial DNA testing determined that the baby was a boy.

On December 9, a woman walking with her young niece spotted a blanket near some bushes and smelled decay.

The decomposing infant was inside a plastic bag and wrapped in a blanket.
Police are now reviewing surveillance video from areas around Fort Taber as part of the ongoing investigation into "Baby Doe." Police are also working with a private lab in Texas to try to determine whose baby "Baby Doe" is and to process evidence found at the scene.

The mother of an infant who was found dead at Fort Taber Park in New Bedford late last year faced a judge Monday morning, according to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III.
Daniela Michell Escobar-Mejia, 22, has been charged with improper disposal of a body and was released on personal recognizance.

The baby’s body was found in December by a woman and her niece who were walking along a path near the water.
Quinn said the woman noticed the blanket, as well as “an odor of decay,” in the thicket of brush along the walking path. Inside the blanket was the male infant’s decaying body wrapped in a plastic shopping bag, he added.
Investigators linked Escobar-Mejia to the infant through DNA analysis and by reviewing the park’s surveillance footage. It is believed the infant was left in the park more than a month prior to his body being discovered, according to Quinn.

The infant’s cause of death could not be determined due to the state of decomposition, according to Quinn. The medical examiner also couldn’t be ascertain whether he was alive prior to being dumped at the park.

in my opinion if you have nothing to hide about what caused the death of your child you would call an ambulance , the cops anybody at all, even bringing your child yourself to find the cause of death. don't tell me well maybe no money for burial or cremation heck there is always the go fund me , parents and friends, etc to borrow money from if not sell something of yours you t.v., game consol, jewelery ect i would even sell my wedding rings , and there is also social services that can help you find someone that might be able to help pay for the service ... you just don't wrap a child in a blanket and leave your child like garbage on side of road etc....

A 22-year-old New Bedford woman pled guilty in New Bedford District Court on a single charge of Improper Disposal of a Body connected to the male infant found at Fort Taber Park on December 9, 2023.
Daniela Michell Escobar-Mejia, who is the mother of the deceased infant, was sentenced to two years of probation and she must comply with state Department of Children and Family Services orders, which include taking parental classes and receiving counseling, according to the Standard Times.
Due to the state of decomposition the infant was found in, the medical examiner was unable to determine if the baby had been alive prior to the alleged dumping of the infant in the park. No cause and manner of death could be determined.

Investigators determined the infant was allegedly left in the park on November 6th, meaning it was there for more than a month prior to it being discovered.
Escobar-Mejia told investigators she hadn’t known she was pregnant until she went into labor in her apartment. She stated that the baby was stuck in the birth canal and when she was able to free him, he was blue and not breathing. She believed he was dead. Escobar-Mejia never received medical attention.

Tubal ligation is more appropriate than parenting classes in this case.

Not knowing you were pregnant is never an excuse for throwing a baby away. She should get jail time just for littering and putting a young child threw the horrific experience of finding a dead baby thrown on the ground.
