The parents of a 2-year-old boy who died this month in Kyle have been arrested and charged with causing his death as well as allegedly injuring their 9-month-old girl.

Stevie Dwayne Williams, 24, and Dazrine Ruth Chagoya-Williams, 20, were arrested Monday and charged with capital murder of a person under 10 years old and injury to a child.

Kyle police say they responded to the family's home on the Fourth of July holiday. When they arrived, officers found the child was not breathing. They also found the toddler had "bruising on his left and right rib area, bruising on his back and bruising on his forehead."

Hays County Justice of the Peace Beth Smith originally told KXAN it did not appear to be a natural death and there were some "worrisome findings."

Child Protective Services says it had previous encounters with the family involving the son. On July 4, CPS says they immediately removed the 9-month-old daughter and placed her in foster care.

Stevie's mother, the children's grandmother, told KXAN she saw the children several times a week and never noticed anything that raised a red flag.

"My son would never harm his son," she said. "They were the best of parents... and to say these two could've abused these two children — it's ludicrous."

When interviewed by investigators, the children’s mother said when her husband entered their son's bedroom, he was already dead. She claimed the boy did not have any bruises on him when he went to sleep.

Chagoya-Williams' 'only explanation was "something (not someone) attacked him or something,"' an arrest affidavit stated

Williams offered a similar explanation, suggesting that 'something not worldly, ' such as 'demons' or 'evil,' had harmed his son.

Child Protective Services had been in contact with the family in the past. According to the affidavit, Mason Williams had been removed from his parents’ care for nearly a year after he was discovered suffering from a broken wrist, cracked ribs and burns to his limbs and genitals from hot water in the spring of 2017.

After Williams and Chagoya-Williams completed parenting classes six months ago, they regained custody of the boy. CPS had stopped monitoring the family three months ago.

Following Mason's death on July 4, CPS caseworkers removed his injured baby sister from the home and placed her with a foster family.

Stevie Dwayne Williams' mother seems to think this about her son:
... Stevie's mother, the children's grandmother .... saw the children several times a week and never noticed anything that raised a red flag ... "My son would never harm his son .... They were the best of parents... and to say these two could've abused these two children — it's ludicrous."
She over there several times a week and didn't notice her grandson was missing for a few months?
... Child Protective Services says it had previous encounters with the family involving the son ... the boy been removed from his parents' care for almost a year after he was found with cracked ribs, a fractured wrist and burns to his "foot, leg and genitals from hot water."
Why the fuck does the media print this garbage? Who gives a fuck what the fucked up parents of a piece of shit has to say, unless its "I've known my kid was an evil shit, but no one believed me" or some such

Wow ... all of these fucked up parents. Broken kids.

I just can't imagine violence being my go to, when disciplining my kids.

Especially with a toddler, like its just so easy to scoop them up and tell them that if they do that again you're going to eat their feet,

and then shove one of their feet in your mouth when you see some doubt on their face ...

It totally builds trust ... Nom .. nom .. nom !!!

The first day of testimony has concluded in what is expected to be a roughly two-week-long trial to determine if Stevie Dwayne Williams killed his two-year-old son.

Stevie and his wife, Dazrine Ruth Chagoya-Williams, are both facing capital murder charges in the death of their son who died in Kyle in July 2018.
At the time, Dazrine told officers that when Stevie went into the child’s room, he wasn’t alive anymore. Her “only explanation was ‘something (not someone) attacked him or something,'” an affidavit said. Stevie had told police that “something not worldly” had hurt the child, stating that it could be “demons, evil,” the affidavit said.

During opening remarks Wednesday morning, the state laid out a roadmap for jurors of what they would be seeing and hearing over the next two weeks including testimony from first responders, Williams’ family and their family doctor.

Williams’ attorney started the trial by suggesting that Williams’ wife was the person behind the boy’s death. She has also been charged with murder in the case.

After opening comments, jurors first heard from the 911 dispatcher who took the call from Dazrine on the Fourth of July, the day the boy was found dead. The recording of that call was played in court.

“My son, my son didn’t wake up from his nap,” Dazrine can be heard saying in that recording. “He, we, we can’t get him up.

Jurors also heard from several first responders Wednesday and watched body camera footage showing a police officer’s arrival on scene and interaction with the couple.
Child Protective Services said it had previous encounters with the family. The affidavit said the boy had been removed from his parents’ care for almost a year after he was found with cracked ribs, a fractured wrist and burns to several areas of his body from hot water.

The boy was returned to the Williams after Stevie and Dazrine after the parents participated in parenting classes.

A Hays County jury found Stevie Dwayne Williams guilty of capital murder in the death of his 2-year-old son, Mason, after the boy was found squeezed to death in 2018. Williams will spend life in prison without the possibility of parole. The jury deliberated for roughly eight hours.

During closing arguments Wednesday afternoon, before the jury went into deliberations, the defense argued the state hadn’t proven without a reasonable doubt that it was actually Stevie, and not Stevie’s wife, who was responsible for the boy’s murder. Stevie’s attorney pointed the finger at Dazrine Ruth Chagoya-Williams, who is also facing capital murder charges. Her trial is scheduled for the end of this year.

The state argued the evidence was overwhelming that both Stevie and Dazrine are responsible for the 2-year-old’s death and asked the jury to find Stevie guilty of capital murder. The jury agreed.

Over the last week, jurors have heard from family members of both Dazrine and Stevie, child protective services, first responders, a forensic pathologist, a pediatrician, detectives and the adopted dad for the couple’s youngest daughter, among other witnesses.

Evidence brought forward by the state included photos and videos from first responders of the scene where Mason was found dead, recorded interviews with Stevie following Mason’s death, photos and videos pulled off of the couple’s phones and x-rays and photos taken of the injuries to both Mason and his younger sister.

Mason’s autopsy revealed his chest had been constricted to the point that he could not breath, cutting off oxygen to the brain which ultimately caused his death. He was also found to have other internal and external injuries.

During interviews following Mason’s death, Stevie told investigators with the Kyle Police Department that it was actually “demons” or something “evil” that had killed his son. Over the course of Stevie’s interview with police, which was more than an hour long and was played for the jury, Stevie maintained that neither he nor his wife were involved in any way.

The state’s case lasted a little more than a week. The defense did not bring additional witnesses or evidence forward before resting its case. Stevie did not testify.

he third day of testimony is scheduled to begin Thursday morning in the trial of Dazrine Chagoya-Williams, the young Kyle mother who allegedly murdered her nearly 2-year-old son, Mason, in 2018.
A jury will decide over the next couple of weeks whether Chagoya-Williams, alongside her husband and the child’s father, Stevie, is guilty of capital murder. Stevie Williams was found guilty in October 2021 of the same charge.
According to court documents, many of the same witnesses who testified in Stevie's trial will also testify in Dazrine's.

A Kyle bio-unit has received a life sentence without parole for her infant son's murder in 2018.

Dazrine Chagoya-Williams, 24, was convicted of capital murder this week.
The trial lasted two weeks, showing that on July 4, 2018, she called 911 claiming that the 20-month-old, Mason Williams, was discovered not breathing after a nap. The Kyle Fire Department and EMS attempted to save the boy but soon noticed bruising and other evidence suggesting that the death had occurred hours earlier.

Hays County officials said that investigators learned that up to 12 minutes before the initial 911 call, both parents had made multiple calls to tell family members that the boy was dead. In the trial, the medical examiner and a Dell Children's Hospital pediatrics expert testified that Mason's death resulted from someone squeezing the child's body, depriving his brain of oxygen.
The day after his death, officials said an 8-month-old girl was removed from their care by Child Protective Services. Physicians at Dell Children's also noticed serious injuries on the girl, Mason's sister, that were similar in nature to his.
Officials said that the mother gave multiple statements containing inconsistencies and denying knowledge of the children's injuries. Extractions taken from both parents' phones suggested they knew of injuries to both children for several months.

CPS caseworkers testified that they had observed similar injuries on Mason in 2017. He was returned to the couple by CPS in March 2018 after they had completed required services.
Chagoya-Williams' trial began on April 25. A guilty verdict was returned on May 6. Bill Henry, the 428th Judicial District Court Judge, sentenced her to life in prison without the possibility of parole, which is automatic in a capital murder case in which the State does not seek the death penalty.
Previously, the Hays County Criminal District Attorney's Office had represented the Department of Family and Protective Services in a parental rights termination trial in February of 2019. Then, a jury terminated the couple's parental rights to their surviving child.
The sperm donor, 27-year-old Stevie Dwayne Williams Jr. of San Marcos, was convicted of capital murder in October 2021. He is also serving a life sentence without parole.

“The fact that both his parents were complicit in ending Mason Williams’ too-short life makes this case doubly tragic,” said Hays County Criminal District Attorney Wes Mau.
