Police say a woman admitted to stabbing her son in the throat with scissors at the Motel 6 in St. George on Thursday, telling authorities “I had to.”

According to the probable cause statement filed in support of the arrest, 28-year-old Megan Michelle Stewart is being held at Purgatory Correctional Facility on three charges, including attempted murder. Her place of residence was not revealed in the report; however, it states Stewart had an active warrant in Washington County for domestic violence-related charges and is on probation for a previous DUI in Colorado, where she also has a protective order for her son filed against her.

The police report identified the child as being the 8-year-old son of the suspect. St. George Police initially reported the child as being 10-years-old on Thursday.

According to the police report, an employee at the Motel 6 told officers that she initially saw the child around 9 a.m. running through an alley between two buildings at the motel, screaming for help and yelling that his mother was trying to suffocate him.

The employee told police that the woman who was later identified as Stewart followed a short distance behind the boy and told the employee “Don’t worry, he just got his butt whooped.” Police said the child then returned to Stewart’s room with his mother.

Two hours later, police said a housekeeper saw the child outside the room, claiming his mom wanted to “kill him.” The housekeeper told the child to return to the room, then contacted the clerk, who called 911 after seeing the room’s window and door closed.

The clerk returned to the room after calling dispatch, the report said, and found the door open and blood all over the room and the child lying on the bed. The employee, seeing the position of the child, the blood and the boy’s purple complexion, told police that she thought the child was dead.

When police arrived, the hotel manager said he had seen Stewart walking away from the motel, informing officers of her direction of travel. A short time later, police captured Stewart.

At the station, the police report said Stewart admitted that she was with the child in the room, tried to suffocate him with a pillow, then stabbed him in the throat with scissors.

Police said when Stewart was asked in interrogation why she stabbed the child with scissors, she replied, “I had to” and mentioned it was for “Satan” or “Mother Mary.” When she was told that the child was in the hospital undergoing surgery, the report states she responded that she did not want the child to recover.

The child is continuing to recover at St. George Regional Hospital, with police expecting a full recovery.

Along with attempted murder, Stewart was booked on charges of child abuse and a violation of the protective order, as well as the domestic violence charges in Washington County.

She remains on a 72-hour probation hold at the Purgatory facility, pending a hearing next week.

Well, if she can't decide between Satan and Mother Mary, then it makes perfect sense that she ended up in Purgatory.

Stupid bitch. So crazy yet was able to say "Oh he just got his butt whooped" if she was THAT nuts she would have told the employee she had to kill him for Satan or whatever. Just trying to get off easy. Hope they find her wannabe kid killer ass competent and guilty so she rots in prison. Also wtf? Why did NO ONE call the cops first? A kid running and crying my moms trying to kill me and no one thought to call the cops during the first incident?! Assholes those employees.

Megan Michelle Stewart made a plea agreement with Washington County to plead guilty to the first-degree charge of attempted murder in exchange for lesser charges, including child abuse, to be dropped.
In the agreement, Stewart admitted to attempting to suffocate her son with a pillow at Motel 6 in St. George on Aug. 26, 2021, then stabbing him in the neck with scissors. The murder attempt drew a large police response.
During the hearing at the 5th District Courthouse, Judge John Walton agreed to the terms of the agreement withholding the usual prison sentence for the crime of three years to life in state prison.
Instead, Stewart will be jailed for the next year at Purgatory Correctional Facility in Hurricane, where she has been held since August 2021. She will not be credited with time served but could be released early with good behavior.
In addition, Walton ordered 48 months’ probation for Stewart once she is released from jail, which prohibits unsupervised contact with children under 18. That includes her son, who is now 10 years old and is in the process of being adopted by Stewart’s out-of-state brother and wife, Stewart’s defense lawyer Ryan Stout said.

Other conditions of the four-year probation include mental health evaluations, no alcohol or going into a bar, and no unprescribed drugs or being in the company of someone with such medications.
Stewart addressed the court, apologizing for her crime and blamed medicine she took for her back that caused her to “see ghosts.”
“I apologize to you, your honor, to everyone, especially my son, for what he went through. I can’t change it, it hurts every day. I love him so much,” Stewart said to the court. “I took some medicine, sir, and it was for my back. My back was out of place, and it made me react and start seeing ghosts and things that shouldn’t happen. I’m just glad that my son made it, and I would like to still be in his life.”
Prosecutors have said Stewart’s son has reconciled with his mom and has had regular supervised video contact with her, and will continue to do so while the adoption process continues with his uncle.

Washington County Attorney Eric Clarke has previously cited the mental illness of Stewart and the wishes of the now 10-year-old. The county’s prosecuting attorney, Eric Gentry, repeated those claims in court on Thursday, saying that the feelings of Stewart’s child need to be taken into account.
“A major factor is the victim in this case has not wanted to see her go to prison,” said Gentry. “It’s horrific what she did, but this is unusual behavior for Stewart. She has a history of mental illness and she has been a model prisoner in jail. We are convinced this was a psychotic break she went through.”
