Elijah Matias, 24, has been sentenced to 7 ½ to 20 years in a state prison in the death of a 3-year-old Reading boy who was under his care in 2021.
He was convicted in January of aggravated assault of a child under 13, endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person.
The jury acquitted Matias of first- and third-degree murder charges.
Reading police were dispatched on Jan. 28, 2021, for a report of a 3-year-old boy in respiratory distress. The child was transported to Reading Hospital, where he died that night.
The child had been in the sole care of his mother’s lover, Matias, just before the 911 call was made from the residence.
An autopsy conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Neil Hoffman revealed the child had suffered internal and external injuries that were in various stages of healing.

The investigation continued after the autopsy, but no arrests were made for more than three years.
