A 26-year-old man sexually assaulted and strangled a Wisconsin college student, then pretended to be an innocent bystander after the attack, telling a witness he found the victim lying nearby before disappearing when the witness asked him to wait at the scene, authorities said.
Brandon A. Thompson was arrested early Wednesday morning in connection with Sunday’s attack in downtown Madison, police said. The woman was found around 3:20 a.m. after someone had heard the commotion in the area and called the police.
Thompson was booked into the Dane County Jail on charges of first-degree sexual assault, first-degree reckless injury, and strangulation. The victim was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive, officials said.
In a statement on Wednesday, Thompson’s attorneys said he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he studied criminal justice administration and had a minor in psychology.

“His family asks that the media respect their privacy during this stressful time,” the statement said.
Authorities said there was no connection between him and the victim in what officials called a “horrific” attack.

Self-described “monster” Brandon Thompson told cops he “saw red” before he allegedly raped and beat an unsuspecting University of Wisconsin-Madison student within an inch of her life.
The 26-year-old told investigators he remembered repeatedly hitting the stranger over the weekend, but could not be sure that he sexually assaulted her, according to court records obtained by the Wisconsin State Journal.

Thompson silently hung his head as he virtually attended court proceedings Thursday as prosecutors detailed “one of the most horrific sexual assaults in recent memory here.”
“What we’ve learned in the course of the last 72 hours … is that this defendant was simply driving down the street and saw the victim, had no prior interaction or contact with the victim, and spontaneously decided to pull his car over, most of this occurring on camera, follow her for some distance around the Downtown area, and then attack her,” Dane County Deputy District Attorney William said at the initial hearing.

Thompson allegedly broke the woman’s jaw, smashed out several of her teeth and strangled her after pouncing on her as she walked through the college town’s commercial district around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.
The survivor remains hospitalized in critical condition after being diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury.

She has yet to give police a statement due to her condition.
The victim, who is in her 20s, was expected to survive her injuries. She was initially classified as being in critical condition.

Name: THOMPSON, BRANDON A

Maximum Discharge Date: 08/27/2073

The man convicted in the brutal 2023 attack and sexual assault of a UW-Madison student was sentenced on Thursday.
Brandon Thompson will serve 30 years in prison, followed by 20 years of extended supervision.

The sentence was broken down to 30 years for the first-degree sexual assault charge, 15 years for the first-degree reckless injury charge and three years for the strangulation/suffocation charge. The sentences run concurrently, meaning all at the same time.
Thompson spoke on his behalf during the hearing, apologizing to the woman he attacked, her loved ones and to his family. Thompson pleaded for “a chance to get the help he needs and get the second chance to function as a member of society again.”
The survivor of the attack, identified as Jane Doe during the hearing, was in the courtroom Thursday. Her recovery was described as “miraculous” by many, as Dane County Assistant District Attorney Matt Moeser said she was diagnosed with a grade-two traumatic brain injury and brain bleed. She still has little to no sense of smell because of her injuries.
