Call it fate, luck, or being at the right place at the right time, as a man discovered two young children abandoned behind a high school in Madison Heights.

The children were discovered near a back entrance at Lamphere High School around 1 p.m. Saturday (July 15). Madison Heights Police Department confirmed that there was a note found with the infants.
LHS is a meeting location for Official Driving School. Before swapping students for a segment one session, instructor John Belyea and a student were planning to go inside for a bathroom break.

“When I came over here (toward the entrance), I’m listening, and it’s a weird noise like two cats fighting,” said Belyea. “Something’s wrong. So I started making loud noise to scare them off, and I’m like, wait a minute, that’s not cats. I’m thinking, ‘That sounds like a baby.’ I didn’t see anything, so I walked over where I heard the noise from around the wall where the two infants were at.”

Belyea said the smallest child was in a car seat with a cover and blanket, and the other child looked to be around 1 year old. Police later confirmed the child is 2 years old.

“The one that was screaming, I want to say, kind of saved her brother, sister, or whoever because if I didn’t hear that noise, I don’t go over around here and see them,” Belyea said. “I know whoever did this had to be in a bad situation, and I also feel bad for the young kids. I don’t know how long they were there for.”

It's a wonder the older one didn't wander off and get hurt. There are so many places that would have gladly taken your babies, even the older one, that there was no need to leave them all alone some place that they might not be found. Yeah I give them credit for not killing them but leaving them alone in an out of the way place is pretty close to that.

A woman was arrested after two children were found alone Saturday afternoon outside a high school by a dumpster in Madison Heights, Michigan, police say.
Two children who were believed to be about 4 weeks old and 2 years old were found outside Lamphere High School alone in car seats, according to The Associated Press.
A driving instructor, John Belyea, told the news outletthat he walked up to the building of the school and heard some odd noises. He at first thought it was cats fighting but realized it was a child. Belyea said he searched the area and found the two children in car seats behind a brick wall.

Belyea called the police, WDIV reported. Officers and firefighters arrived at the high school immediately.

Both children were taken to the hospital to be evaluated. Police said according to the news outlet, that both children were in stable condition.

It is unclear how the woman is related to the children, the AP reported. Her name has also not been released.

Authorities said Thursday that the parents of the children were identified, and that a 20-year-old woman was taken into custody. It was not said what day the woman was arrested. Police did not explicitly say the woman is the mother or guardian of the children, but did imply as much, saying Child Protective Services was contacted.

There is no apparent connection to the Lamphere School District specifically, police said.
A note was reportedly found with the children, but its contents haven’t been revealed at this time.

5 bucks says - drugs were involved, somewhere down this line of events.

Humans are in an auditory sense a bit tuned-in to this difference =p

It's possible to be walking down the road and hear an ongoing sound and you're brain is like ... that's not a baby, right?

Also, babies have an instinct to make noise and continue making noise if there is some possibility that they are being abandoned (or ignored). You might have noticed that, tho!

I don't know that men who don't have children or haven't dealt with babies on a regular basis would catch the difference as fast a woman with children might. I know it sounds sexist, but as far as I'm concerned it's true. I know there are exceptions to everything. I've heard cats courting that sounded like babies screaming, so there's that.

*raises hand* I would add them both to my herd of small people happily.

It's not sexist at all @cubby, it's biology.

"Having a kid changes a mother’s brains—and it’s not just “mother brain,” the forgetful state new moms complain about. Research has shown that pregnancy changes the architecture of the brain for at least two years in areas that govern the understanding of the thoughts, feelings, beliefs and intentions of others. Now, a new study published in the journal PNAS suggests that maternal brains around the world also adapt so that mothers can quickly respond to a baby’s cry—and that their brain responses are different from those of women who do not have children."

I'm almost 65, my "baby" is nearly 39, but when I near a kid screaming mama in Wal-Mart, for a second, I start looking for my kids, lol. Several years ago I was shopping and I hear Mama! Mama! Mama!, i just keep walking telling myself not one of mine, but lo and behold, it was my oldest, he came up behind me yelling, Answer me WOMAN!!!!

i still wake up from sound sleep if a kid says "mom"... my great grand and her mom were visiting and the little one called her mom during the night (bathroom run) . i was up and escorting her to bathroom before her mom could make it to her room lol...

I remember my daughter crying and then my granchildren... I smile because I realise it'll be over before parents will know it - and then it will repeat.

A Michigan woman who abandoned her children behind a wall near a dumpster at Lamphere High School has been sentenced to prison. According to WDIV-Detroit, Hannah Swegles, 21, pleaded guilty earlier this year to two counts each of child abandonment and second-degree child abuse in connection to the case.
Swegles was sentenced to between three and 10 years in prison on May 7.

What gorgeous hair she has, but that sullen face of extreme inconvenience, like the cops just dragged her out of the best party she'd ever been to, killing her buzz, making her take responsibility for her children. I truly hope she never sees them again, tho with a face like that she'll never realize what she lost.
