A 19-year-old father has been charged with child abuse after his 3-month-old son died from suspected blunt force trauma, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office said Monday.

After the child's death, Warren police officer were notified that the infant had the coronavirus, which resulted in the six responding officers being quarantined.

A total of 25 Warren officers with the department have been quarantined now.
On April 10, the child, his mother, and the child's father, Laquan Kevon Williams, were staying at a motel when the child was taken to Ascension Macomb Hospital in Warren and then transferred to Detroit Receiving where he later died.

Williams was later arrested and charged with child abuse and felony murder, officials said.

The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office is still awaiting an autopsy report, however, charges against Williams were filed after officers were notified that the infant died of blunt force trauma.

Williams remains in custody at Macomb County Jail.

The mother was not charged. Prosecutors say she was not in the motel room at the time of the incident.

A 20-year-old man charged with felony murder in the death of his infant son is asking for Macomb County prosecutors to deviate from its no-plea policy in this type of case.

Attorney Richard Taylor, representing defendant Laquan K. Williams, submitted the request for a plea deal that could result in lower charges than felony murder and first-degree child abuse. Felony murder carries an automatic penalty of life in prison without parole.

Williams’ 3-month-old son last April 10 was taken by ambulance from a Warren motel to Ascension Macomb Hospital in Warren and transferred to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he died from blunt-force trauma, according to Warren police.

Taylor’s “deviation” request has not been decided upon by prosecutors. Assistant Macomb Prosecutor Colleen Worden said at a hearing Wednesday in Macomb County Circuit Court that the new administration under Prosecutor-elect will make the call.

“There wasn’t an outright denial” of the request, Worden told Judge Edward Servitto.

Taylor could not be reached for comment.

A 21-year-old Warren man charged with first-degree murder for the death of his son at a motel pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and will serve at least 20 years in prison under the plea deal.

Laquan Williams entered the plea to that charge and first-degree child abuse last week in front of Macomb Circuit Judge Edward Servitto for the death of his 3-month-old son in April 2020 at an undisclosed motel where he lived with the boy’s mother.

First-degree murder carries a mandatory penalty of life in prison without parole while second-degree murder is punishable by any number of years up to life.

Williams is accused of causing the fatal injuries to his son April 10, 2020. The child was taken to Ascension Macomb Hospital in Warren and transferred to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he later died from blunt-force trauma, according to Warren police.

Williams in February 2021 was among a group of four county jail inmates who beat another inmate suspected of stealing an item. Williams pleaded guilty last April in 41B District Court in Clinton Township to aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. He was sentenced to time-served, 27 days, and two years probation by Judge Sebastian Lucido, according to court records.

Following the beating, Judge Servitto raised the bond from $300,000 cash or surety to $500,000 cash or surety upon request of Macomb prosecutors. His bond was revoked at the Oct. 4 plea hearing.

A 21-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the death of his 3-month-old son while under his care at a Warren hotel.
Laquan Williams had considered withdrawing his no-contest plea to second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse but on decided to stick to the plea and sentencing agreement during the hearing in front of Judge Edward Servitto in Macomb County Circuit Court in Mount Clemens.

The child died of blunt-force trauma to his head in April 2020 after he was taken from the Days Inn off Van Dyke Avenue between 13 and 14 mile roads, where Williams and the mother were staying, to a hospital.
“I’m not a murderer. I’m not a malicious person,” Williams said. “I tried my hardest to provide for my son. My hardest. I’m sitting here and you’re accusing me of killing my son, my child.”

Servitto told Williams he is “not an evil person.”

“You made a tragic error in judgment,” the judge said.
He noted Williams, who was 19 at the time, “perhaps did not have the support system” to care for a child.

Williams’ attorney, Ken Vernier, noted his client was not raised by his parents but was in foster care as a child. He pointed out Williams called 911 when the child was unresponsive and said he is remorseful.
“He’s expressed to me a tremendous amount of remorse,” he said. “You can see it on his face. He’s going through a tremendous amount of grief and loss with these issues. Being so young, having a child and struggling to provide for that child, even to provide a home for that child in the hotel situation put a tremendous amount of stress on Mr. Williams. He lost his cool, and here we are.”
A statement by the child’s mother was read aloud by Assistant Macomb Prosecutor Colleen Worden. The mother agreed with the resolution of the case.

“Losing my son has changed my life around so much,” she said. “It caused me so much hurt, pain and trauma. It is very sad. And I’m very hurt that Laquan wasn’t being truthful telling me what he did. He has made my life painful and untrustworthy. And I will never get over this.”
