A man was booked into the El Paso County Detention Center Monday for capital murder.

Marvin Rex Lake, 24, was arrested Monday and charged, according to jail records.

El Paso police said Lake was arrested in connection with the murder of 1-year old Ahren DeHart.

In the early morning hours of Tuesday officers were called to Children’s Medical Center after Ahren was taken there with multiple injuries, including a skull fracture.

Investigators learned Ahren, as well as another infant and toddler, had been left in the care of Lake while the childrens' mother went to work.

Just before midnight on April 12 the mother returned from work and found Ahren unresponsive.

Ahren was admitted into the hospital in critical condition and was soon placed on life-support, as his injuries were described by doctors as acute and non-accidental.
Sadly, Ahren succumbed to his injuries on Friday.

Extended family told KTSM 9 News this was the first time that Lake cared for Ahren and that he was a friend of Ahren’s parents. They said Ahren’s regular babysitter called out sick and Lake was a last-minute child care option while his parents worked.

A Texas babysitter charged with murdering a 1-year-old child he was watching reportedly told authorities that he used “wrestling-style moves” on the infant.

The 1-year-old child, identified as Ahren Joshua DeHart, had suffered brain damage and other injuries including lung hemorrhaging, suspected abdominal injuries and there were bruises on the child’s lower body, according to KXAN.
At some point, Lake reported the 1-year-old had gone limp and was vomiting a red substance, according to the report.

Police said Lake told them DeHart’s injuries were the result of him trying “wrestling-style moves” on the infant, who at one point fell out of Lake’s hand and hit the frame of a futon, according to KFox 14. Lake also reportedly told authorities he grabbed DeHart in a football hold after DeHart ripped a pillow but that he was not responsible for DeHart’s head injuries, just the internal ones, according to KXAN.

It doesn't really matter. By whatever method, he killed that baby. As to motive, I seriously doubt a 1-yr-old had the strength to rip a pillow. Even if he did, so what? We would all like to know exactly how the murderous asshole did it, but, if there was a video, I'm sure I wouldn't be able to watch it.

Ahren Joshua DeHart's parents thought their 13-month-old son was safe with a trusted family friend.

Instead, that man is now accused of fatally injuring the child in a “monstrous” moment that has left the family devastated, a family member said.

Ahren died April 16, days after he suffered injuries while being babysat by 24-year-old Marvin Rex Lake, according to El Paso Police Department and the DeHart family.

Ahren will be remembered as a "beautiful and loving boy who was always smiling," said Ahren's granduncle, Lawrence DeHart.

The loss of their only child has left the young parents devastated, DeHart said.

"They're just grieving, and this is about the most devastating of a fashion as you can imagine," DeHart said. "What they've had to go through that people don't see or understand — holding your baby in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) while he takes his last breaths is horrific. It all brought tears to our eyes and we cried deep. You carry these types of wounds with you for life."
He stressed that Ahren's parents didn’t leave the child with just anyone.

"They've known him (Lake) for a while," DeHart said. "This guy's wife is coworkers with baby Ahren's mom. So, they knew him and he was watching his stepkids at home and he was just going to watch baby Ahren for one day for like five hours. Who would ever think that it would turn into this monstrous situation where this man would take this baby's life."

Lake served in the U.S. Army with Ahren’s father, Brandon DeHart, and Lake’s girlfriend was a coworker of Ahren’s mother, Araya DeHart, at the Hospitals of Providence Memorial Campus, Lawrence DeHart said.

Brandon DeHart is a U.S. Army specialist stationed at Fort Bliss.

Fort Bliss officials would only say that Lake was discharged from the U.S. Army while serving at the post last year.

Lake is accused of performing wrestling moves on Ahren that resulted in the baby suffering a skull fracture and several other internal injuries, according to court documents.

Days later, his parents had to make the heartbreaking choice to remove him from life support.

"He was their first kid," Lawrence DeHart said. "This young 20-year-old, newly married couple just starting their careers and lives together having to sit in the NICU and knowing that the neurosurgeons have said there's pretty much no way he's going to get brain function back. He's breathing because of machines."

He continued: "His blood's pumping through his body because of machines. And then at roughly 2:30 p.m. Friday (April 16) afternoon, they had to make the horrible decision to pull him from all of those machines and allow him to pass away. Just imagine having to hold him as he died and take his last breath in your arms. It's devastating."

A GoFundMe account was created by Araya DeHart's boss to help the family with the financial cost. The account has received more than $15,700 through more than 200 donors.

“It's so much more than just the financial help,” Lawrence DeHart said. “It's healing. We all hop on it and see who donated. When we see that friends or family did, it means something so much more valuable. It's like these little brief moments where you can escape this cruel reality and see that people care and that they're helping. They're leaving little messages and it's just so much more.”

Marvin Lake was convicted of the 2021 capital murder of 13-month-old Ahren DeHart today. He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder.

In April of 2021 Lake was babysitting several young children while the children's mothers were at work. When they returned, investigators said they found DeHart unresponsive.
The young boy was rushed to a hospital and placed on life support, police said, with doctors determining there were multiple injuries including a fractured skull. Doctors told police the injuries were not the result of an accident.
According to a police affidavit obtained by ABC-7, Lake admitted to performing some wrestling moves on the toddler and the boy hit his head on a futon and fractured his skull.
The police affidavit stated Lake told police he was upset the 13-month-old boy had destroyed a pillow, so he grabbed the boy using what he described as a "tight football hold." Lake said he had anger issues and didn't realize his own strength. The two other children who were being watched by Lake at the time also appeared to have injuries.
A relative who spoke with ABC-7 a week after the murder said Lake was a family friend of the DeHarts. The relative explained that Lake was in the army with DeHart's father and that Lake's fiancé worked with DeHart's mother. Lake had babysitted for the DeHarts from time to time. On the day of the murder, the family's normal babysitter was not available.
