A judge sentences a Cranston woman to serve 10 years for the death of her 9-month-old son.
Katherine Castaneda,30, will be serving two years at the ACI, one-and-a-half years in home confinement, and the remainder on probation.
Castaneda was found guilty of manslaughter this past spring for failing to call 911 when her baby, Jayson "JJ" Flores, displayed symptoms of unusual behavior in 2020.
"Babe there's something wrong with JJ," another prosecutor read from a thread of text messages. "'But he's breathing.' The defendant admits in these messages that she realized something was wrong with her child."
Police say Castaneda dropped JJ off with a babysitter.
Situated in his car seat, she told the babysitter he was sleeping.
But he didn’t wake up, and hours later, when the babysitter checked on him, she said he was unresponsive and cold.
A forensic pathologist ruled JJ's cause of death as blunt force trauma, with bleeding and hemorrhaging of his brain.
"She had a second chance that morning, when that baby woke up, to help that baby," state prosecutors continued. "It may have already been too late, but she could've ."
