It sounds like both parties were guilty of road rage, but that's no excuse for shooting someone and leaving them to die. Have I mentioned that I HATE plea deals?

An Illinois man initially charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal road rage incident last year has entered a guilty plea to a lesser charge and a judge sentenced him to 18 years in prison, according to authorities.

On Feb. 27, 2022, the victim, 46-year-old Scott Mattison, was backing his pickup truck into his driveway when Jonathan Mejia, 20, pulled up in a sedan, authorities said.

Instead of waiting for Mattison to finish backing up into the driveway, he maneuvered around the truck, the Daily Herald reported.

Mattison got out of his truck and walked back to Mejia’s vehicle. The pair got into an argument and Mattison reached into Mejia’s vehicle, hitting him in the face, officials said.

Mejia then shot Mattison multiple times with a handgun and drove to the Streamwood Police Department.

Mejia was initially charged with first-degree murder with a firearm and faced a minimum of 35 years in prison if convicted.

However, he admitted to second-degree murder in exchange for the 18 year sentence, defense lawyer Al Kola told the Daily Herald.

Mejia must serve at least 50% of his sentence before he is eligible for parole and he received credit for the 17 months he had been in custody after his arrest, officials said.

We don't see that decision here very often, to go straight to the police station.
Multiple shots, hmm.

I'm interested in what his answer was when he was asked about that choice, why he eliminated the options of calling the police from the scene, calling for medical assistance for Mattison, fleeing. I'm just curious.

He didn't save much time doing that if he was still there after Mattison got out of his truck and walked to Mejia's car.

And why did Mattison get so pissed? He was backing in. It doesn't seem like Mejia was a hazard.

All odd.

Oh, OK. I looked at the article:

"Mattison then drove after Mejia, overtook him and pulled in front of him, which caused Mejia to stop on the road, authorities said."

I think Mejia thought it would be considered self-defense, and I kinda don't blame him for feeling that way.

It was caught on video!

It turns out Mejia had spent a year in juvenile detention for illegal discharge of a gun so he wasn't supposed to have one. I think maybe that was the clincher.

Well, as I said above, both drivers were guilty of road rage. In a perfect world, Mattison would have just let Mejia go on his merry way. But it's not a perfect world, and people have trouble letting things go.

If he was backing out, that makes some sense, but he was backing in.
It's so odd he would find that inconvenient in any way...Did he feel Mejia was disrespecting him?

Mattison had him blocked in on a public street. There was no option to leave and Mattison was aggressive.

When you are forbidden from carrying, you really lose your right to protect yourself.

Well, it's all very thought provoking.

Good case to start a thread on @crazycatlady.

My take is that Mejia didn't wait to wait the couple of seconds it would take for Mattison to back up. He swerved around him and that's what pissed off Mattison.

Normally, that's the conclusion I would reach. It's that he was backing into the driveway that caught my eye.

Not backing out into the roadway.

Because in that scenario, absolutely a driver should wait until the person carefully backed out.
It's common courtesy, it's sensible, you don't want to throw the driver backing out off, and I think it's law in a lot of states it's hot in driver's ed that if someone is backing out there view is limited and you need to wait for them.

None of that applies here
He was moving away from Mejia, away from the road, backing into his driveway.

There really would be no reason for someone to wait until he had backed fully in to his driveway, you would go past when there was ample room.

Am I reading the article incorrectly?

This part
Instead of waiting for Mattison to finish backing up into the driveway, he maneuvered around the truck, the Daily Herald reported.

He wouldn't have impeded, delayed, or caused Mattison to pause at all.

Why would Mejia need to linger until Mattison had the full length of his vehicle on his property?

ETA:
Meh, doesn't matter, don't care anymore.
I'm not even sure what this place is supposed to be about anymore.

One's dead, ones in prison, the jury heard the evidence.

As a truck driver, I've learned to let shit go. You have to assume anyone without a CDL is brain dead when it comes to making decisions about driving around semi trucks. I also think the only people that read the warning stickers on the back on the trailers are the other truck drivers or why else would someone try to pass on the right when a truck is making a right turn?

If someone walks up on your car like that and assaults you why CAN'T you shoot them? What if the man choked him? We should be allowed to protect ourselves from this kind of tyrant. Trying to handle that boy like his son's. Interesting case.

I was thinking the same thing, tbh.
