24-year-old Valessa Matlock faces the charge for the death of her two-month-old son in June 2023.

On June 10, officers responded to an apartment on Getty Terrace where they found the child, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Matlock is accused of not following proper guidelines when putting her baby down to sleep the night before. The investigation also found that living conditions of the apartment were inadequate for any of the children that were living there.

During the investigation, police say Matlock told them she had wrapped the child in a blanket and placed him on the living room couch while she went to bed….she says when she woke the next morning, the child had the blanket over his face and was not breathing. Authorities also stated the living conditions in the apartment were poor.

24-year-old Valessa Matlock was identified as the mother of the child and lived in the apartment with her boyfriend and father of the child 24-year-old Khalil Holloway. The couple also had one other mutual child and another child of Matlock’s living in the apartment.
Following an investigation, officials determined that Holloway reportedly left just prior to police arrival that morning. Officials say that there were signs of marijuana use within the apartment with both Matlock and one of her children testing positive for THC Metabolite. During an interview with police, Holloway reportedly admitted to smoking marijuana in the apartment and owning the drug paraphernalia in the apartment.
Investigators also say that the living conditions of the apartment were not suitable for any of the children living there, with strong odors of cat urine in the apartment, cat feces inside an infant high chair, and soiled diapers overflowing in the trash.
