Court documents reveal that a 3-year-old boy might lose most of his lower leg after his mother kept him in a home without heat until his foot turned black with frostbite.
Amber Griffith, 28, has been arrested and charged with one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 3 felony.

According to court documents, police began investigating the case after Griffith’s son was brought to a hospital on Jan. 19 due to his foot turning black from frostbite.

Police said the child underwent surgery that same day to remove the damaged tissue on his foot with the worst-case scenario being the child having his leg amputated below his knee.
Police ended up speaking to Griffith and found out she lived at a home E. Gimber Street with two relatives. The home had no heat and no running water due to the pipes being frozen, police said.

Court documents reveal that despite Griffith claiming her son’s foot was “slightly discolored” for weeks before the hospital visit, the child was only taken to the hospital once Griffith noticed her own foot was beginning to hurt.
Temperatures were in the single digits in the days leading up to the hospital visit.

“Certainly it’s a disturbing case our child abuse detectives are working,” said IMPD Officer William Young.
The victim’s aunt and grandmother also lived in the home, but insisted they didn’t notice any signs of frostbite before going to the hospital.

The grandmother said she didn’t notice the boy’s foot had turned black with frostbite until attempting to put shoes on him on Jan. 19 to take his mother to the hospital for her foot pain. She did admit to noticing the boy’s legs looking “dry and red” for several days before noticing his foot was black, according to the documents.

How in the hell does this happen? I am a southerner so we never really have this kind of cold. However, we lived up north while I completed my residency and I dressed my kids appropriately. We lost electricity in our apartment after Hurricane Sandy so we layered our toddler daughter up and were vigilant. She never even got cold so how does a child get frostbite indoors if dressed well?

@HijabiGirl you answered your own question, nobody gave a shit whether the boy was dressed or not, I'm sure they were only concerned about themselves, proved that by "mom" going to hospital with a pain when her son's foot was black with gangrene.
You would think after so many years on this site I would think of that. I can't even stand to see my kids get goosebumps before I start putting layers on them. These cases, including children dying of Starvation in the US, for God's sake, never cease to shock and disgust me. There are too many resources out there to let this just happen. There are food pantries, churches with clothes for kids (I donate to the Foster's closet near me) and charities willing to help out.
