Hussam Anjum, 25, of Easton, surrendered Thursday, Dec. 29, to face arraignment on charges related to his 9-month-old child allegedly overdosing on heroin while in his care, Easton police report.
Parents are facing a felony charge after their 9-month-old overdosed on their opioids, tainted paraphernalia from which was left within the baby’s reach in several rooms in an apartment in Easton’s West Ward, city police report.

Kayla Deemer, 31, surrendered Tuesday afternoon to be arraigned before District Judge Richard Yetter III on charges of endangering the welfare of children, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia (both misdemeanors), Lt. Matthew Gerould said. She was released on $25,000 unsecured bail.

An emergency call for advanced life support care was dispatched about 1:30 p.m. Monday to the Washington Street address for a 9-month-old not breathing, Gerould said. It was believed to be an opioid overdose, he added.

City EMS personnel and firefighters responded and firefighters administered Narcan, reviving the child, Gerould and court papers said. The baby required a second dose at the hospital and it was effective, court papers say.

A search warrant was requested and investigators going through the apartment found wax paper packets, some with suspected heroin residue and others with suspected heroin inside, in nearly every room, Gerould said.
Deemer told police that the heroin and residue in the apartment belonged to Anjum and her, court papers say. The white powder field tested as heroin, court papers say.

The Northampton County Division of Children, Youth and Families is involved in the investigation and the child was still being treated Tuesday afternoon in an area hospital, Gerould said.
