Philadelphia police have announced charges against a 17-year-old for the murders of both his foster mother and a man found dead inside a duffel bag.

Xavier Johnson was charged with murder in the stabbing death of 64-year-old Renee Gilyard and in the killing of 20-year-old Jimmy Mao, whose remains were found in a duffel bag.

Robbery appears to be the motive in both cases, police said.

"Both Miss Gilyard and Mr. Mao were brutally tortured and murdered by Xavier Johnson," Philadelphia Police Homicide Captain Jason Smith said Thursday.

Police said Gilyard was discovered in a bathtub inside her Germantown home.

Family members who had come to her home to check on Gilyard found her with multiple stab and defensive wounds.

Police said the contents of her purse had been dumped out and her SUV was gone.

Inside the SUV were four teens, including Johnson, Gilyard's foster son, police said. He had been placed in her care just three days earlier.

Johnson was charged with murder, theft, tampering with evidence, fleeing or eluding a police officer and other charges in Gilyard's death.

Johnson is also charged in the death of 20-year-old Jimmy Mao. Police said Johnson was previously placed in the same foster home with Mao.

Mao was last seen on December 29. Police said Mao's family has been receiving ransom texts since his disappearance.

Mao's remains were found Wednesday night in a back alley in Southwest Philadelphia. Mao's body, authorities said, suffered from blunt force trauma to the face and neck.

"Mr. Mao had been killed. His body was placed inside a black duffel bag and taken to this location where he was thrown down a hill, presumably in an attempt to conceal his death," Smith said.

Johnson is charged with murder, robbery, abuse of corpse, tampering with evidence and other crimes in connection with Mao's death.

A man who was a teen in the Philadelphia foster care system pleaded guilty to killing his foster mother and another man living with them, according to court documents.
Xavier Johnson was 17-years-old when he tried to rob 64-year-old Renee Gilyard and 20-year-old Jimmy Mao before he ultimately killed them, police said at the time.

Homicide detectives described the killings as brutal.
Johnson pleaded guilty to murder in the third degree, robbery-inflict serious bodily injury and possession of an instrument of crime as well as other related charges, according to court documents.
Gilyard was found dead on January 15, 2020, in her home, officials said. She was stabbed twice in the neck inside a bathroom. Her purse was emptied and SUV was taken.
Johnson was placed in her home three days before the killings. Police caught up with him in West Philadelphia later that morning when he crashed the missing SUV following a short police pursuit.
Mao was stabbed in the face and neck, police officials reported. His body was placed in a black duffel bag and thrown down a hill in Southwest Philadelphia. It was recovered in the evening of the same day.
Officials at the time said that Mao and Johnson previously lived together in a different foster. It was near where Mao's body was located.

Officials said that Johnson had five arrests prior to this incident that included aggravated assault.

A Philadelphia man who admitted to killing his foster mother and brother in 2019 was sentenced Wednesday.
Xavier Johnson pleaded guilty in March to third-degree murder in the deaths of 64-year-old Renee Gillard and 20-year-old Jimmy Mao.
Johnson filed a motion Wednesday asking to withdraw his guilty plea, which the judge denied.

He was sentenced to 30 to 80 years in prison.
