A father was arrested in north Alabama on aggravated child abuse charges after his 3-month-old child had to be helicoptered to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham after being revived, authorities said Tuesday.
Bobby Mason Honeycutt’s 3-month-old child was not breathing when the child was taken to Atrium Health Floyd Cherokee in Centre on May 7, Cedar Hill Police Chief Jeremy Stepps said in a statement.
The staff at the hospital revived the child, who was then helicoptered to Children’s, the chief said.

Doctors told investigators the child “has severe trauma due to the extent of the injuries that were observed.”

Honeycutt was arrested on aggravated child abuse of a child less than 6 years old, police said.

On Tuesday, Jan. 13, District Attorney Summer McWhorter Summerford announced that Bobby Honeycutt was sentenced to life for aggravated child abuse by a Cherokee County circuit judge. Summerford represents DeKalb and Cherokee Counties.
According to Summerford, on May 7, 2024, Honeycutt arrived at Atrium Floyd Cherokee with his 3-month-old son. Upon arrival, Honeycutt told staff that his child has stopped breathing and started turning blue.

The child was life-flighted to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham where he was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit in critical condition.
Summerford says the Department of Human Resources (DHR) and law enforcement were notified and an investigation was opened.
The Division Director of Child Abuse Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital informed authorities that the infant had no painful stimuli response, no gag reflex and no pupil response. He was placed on a ventilator and there was no blood present on the frontal lobe of the brain.

The doctor said it was a case of Shaken Baby Syndrome. The doctor also said the baby had a slim chance of survival.

According to Summerford, as a result of the investigation, Honeycutt was charged with aggravated child abuse of a child less than six years of age which is a Class A felony.
Honeycutt entered a guilty plea to the charge and was sentenced to life in the state penitentiary which is the maximum sentence for that offense.

The baby passed away.
