A Killeen teenager testified Tuesday she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after years of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her stepmother, including starving her and banishing her to a barren room with her hands and feet bound with chains.
The 16-year-old told a 19th State District Court jury in Waco that her life vastly improved after Child Protective Services workers removed her from Marianna Miles’ former home in Lacy Lakeview about two years ago - two years after an initial, cursory investigation by CPS.
The girl told the court she was subjected to -Miles, 46, who had custody of the girl and the girl’s four younger brothers while their mother and father were incarcerated, is on trial on two counts of injury to a child and one count of unlawful restraint.
The girl’s mother, who was 16 when she gave birth to her, was able to regain custody of her five children following a two-year state jail term after her probation was revoked for endangering a child.
The children’s father is serving a 20-year prison term for sexually abusing a young girl.
- Was beaten with belts and switches
- She was bound with duct tape; chain and lock.
- Was starved to an emaciated state.
- Was physically assaulted by her 4 brothers at the behest of Miles
The girl also testified she tried to kill herself with a knife, by drinking bleach and by hanging herself with a shirt in her closet. She also ran away from home several times.
During cross-examination of the girl and other witnesses, defense attorney Darren Obenoskey has tried to lay a foundation that Miles made some mistakes, but was at the end of her rope trying to keep the girl and her siblings safe. He asked witnesses if it was possible that Miles confined the girl to her room and bound her hands and legs in an attempt to keep her from running away and harming herself.
The girl testified she thought Miles, who had custody of the girl since she was about 4, was her mother until she was 11. She said Miles finally told her the truth, but spoke negatively of her mother by saying she had mental health problems and was unfit.
“She made me feel like I was saved from a woman who was incapable of caring for me,” she said. After that, she said, Miles treated her differently from her brothers, making her eat alone in her room and only let her out to do school work on the computer.
