An Evansville man was arrested after police said he molested a 12-year-old girl he met online.

Samuel James Stark, 20, faces two counts of child molesting.

Police were called to the emergency room of a local hospital Monday for a "sensitive incident," according to a probable cause affidavit from the Evansville Police Department.

A girl said a man she met online picked her up one night in an Uber. He took her to his apartment, where the alleged incident took place, before returning her to her house in a separate Uber.

The girl reportedly told police that night was the only time the two met face to face. She said they communicated via Instagram, which showed her age to be 13. She told Stark in a video chat, however, that she was actually 12, police said.

Police used data from Uber which allegedly showed that Stark paid for the ride. They used his previous mugshot in a photo line-up, and the girl reportedly identified him as the alleged offender, according to the affidavit.

In an interview, Stark said he brought someone to his apartment the previous weekend, but they only played video games. He denied vaginally penetrating the girl, but he allegedly admitted to other sexual acts.

He said he thought she was 15, but later admitted to knowing her social media profile said she was 13. He didn't remember her saying she was 12.

Police retrieved a jacket and shirt belonging to the girl from Stark's apartment. He wrote her an apology letter, according to the affidavit.

I sort of feel sorry for people who are 18-20 and get in trouble for dating a younger person if they are 15/16.... But "knowing" she is 13, even though she was actually 12, is completely fucking unacceptable. It's not like he couldn't get a girl his own age. There is no excuse. But even if she WAS 15, as you claimed you thought, that is stillllll illegal in most states. 16 is the age of consent in MD and it is that old for a reason! Creep ass nigga. But, I'm glad he seems to show remorse. He certainly had no requirement to write to her, but did so of his own will. I wish there was more to the story, like they knew each other for years through family or something and there was actually emotion to it. Then I could somewhat see it his way a little more, whether it be due to mental illness or true love, but he seems like just another cookie cutter predator that wants what he wants and doesn't care about the consequences to others wellbeing and should be in jail... I wonder what his punishment will be.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – The Evansville Police Department is asking for information after an investigation into a child molestation case uncovered more victims.

In March, Samuel James Stark was arrested after allegedly molesting a 12-year-old girl he met online. Stark has been in jail since then waiting for his trial.

Police say an investigation revealed more victims and “questionable images and videos” from Stark’s electronic devices.

Order of Confinement (Sentenced) Defendant in custody via video. The Defendant has no objections, corrections or additions to the Pre-Sentence Report. The Defendant having entered a plea of guilty pursuant to the Sentencing Recommendation on August 25, 2021, and Judgment of Conviction having been rendered upon the Defendant's Plea to Count 1 Child Molesting, a Level 3 Felony, this cause proceeds to sentencing hearing. Pursuant to the Sentencing Recommendation filed by the parties, the Court sentences the Defendant on Count 1 Eight (8) years executed in the Indiana Department of Correction. The sentence imposed in this cause shall be served consecutively to the Defendant's sentences in Vanderburgh County case numbers 82C01-2003-F3-001984 and 82C01-2005-F3-003044. Pursuant to plea negotiations, on the motion of the State of Indiana, Counts 2, 3 and 4 are ordered DISMISSED. The Court assesses the following financial aspects to this sentence: A $1.00 fine; court costs in the amount of $185.00; $100.00 Child Abuse Prevention Fee; and $500.00 Sexual Assault Victim's Assistance Fee. The Defendant shall have NO DIRECT OR INDIRECT CONTACT with Victim 1. The Defendant shall pay restitution to Victim 1 in the amount of $1,721.69, said amount being reduced to a civil judgment. The State certifies that any and all victims have been notified of the contents of this sentencing recommendation and their right to be present at the sentencing hearing and address the Court concerning the sentence imposed against the Defendant. The Defendant shall provide a DNA sample pursuant to I.C. 10-13-6-10(a)(3).
