Dessa A. Barton, 26, W. Dalton McLendon, 26, Kathreine Kost, 56, and Richard A Hilliker, 52, face charges of endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse.

Investigators received a 911 call on November 6 about an unresponsive child . Emergency crews transported the four-year-old child to a Springfield hospital, then airlifted him to a Kansas City hospital. Medical personnel advised detectives the child suffered various injuries consistent with physical abuse. They said the boy also suffered from extreme malnutrition.

Detectives say the boy spent extended periods of time in a wooden crate constructed of pallets.

Sheriff Rader says the medical staff told his office that the boy suffered various injuries consistent with physical abuse. The primary concern, however, was extreme malnutrition.

Probable cause statements say the boy’s mother is Dessa Barton, and her boyfriend is William McLendon. In an interview with a Stone County detective, Barton said the boy had been self-harming by clawing at his arms and nose and banging his head into things, causing injuries.

The detective asked Barton if she had taken her son to get medical attention. She said she hadn’t. Barton told the detective she had been trying to get on Medicaid so she could take him, but things got delayed due to COVID-19.

Court documents say another detective went to Cox South in Springfield to talk with medical staff about the injuries. A forensic nurse told the detective that the injuries the boy had were consistent with physical abuse. The detective was advised that some of the injuries were found on parts of the boy’s body that would not be possible form self-harming.

The boy had been in the care of Barton since January 2020. Barton and McLendon lived in the home in Billings with McLendon’s mother, Katherine Kost.

Court documents say on November 11, the detective was reviewing messages between Kost and her boyfriend, Richard Hilliker, and noticed several text messages indicating Hilliker had been living or spending a lot of time at the home since September 2020. Detectives say some of the messages indicate Hilliker had direct contact with the boy from September through November, including the day the boy was taken to the hospital.

A preliminary hearing was held on Tuesday for four people charged for child abuse back in November.

Dessa A. Barton, 26, W. Dalton McLendon, 26, Kathreine Kost, 56, and Richard A Hilliker, 52, pleaded not guilty to their charges. Each face charges of endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse.

Detectives who gave testimony also said McLendon admitted to spanking the boy and sometimes using a belt on him. Among the photos shared by Selby was a photo of a belt, which detectives described as “the belt.”

“[McLendon said the child] had this problem where he would pee himself,” Stone County detective Matthew Maggard said.

Maggard also said McLendon told him he had issues trying to get the boy to play with him.

“Dalton said he tried to play with [the child] but he never wanted to play with him because he seemed like a standoff child,” Maggard said in his testimony.

Selby also presented phone records between a few of the four. All four were present during the hearing, but a few of the defense attorneys said some of the evidence did not pertain to each individuals case.
Detectives had also testified that medical personnel told them the child’s injuries were consistent with physical abuse. One detective said the boy was quite skinny when they saw him.

One investigator who gave testimony said Barton told detectives in an interview that she did not know how her son had hurt himself. They said Barton said she believed her son was causing self harm. Detectives said she told them she thought her son need more psychiatric help than medical attention.

Court documents say 52-year-old Richard A. Hilliker entered a plea agreement and was sentenced to five years in the Missouri Department of Corrections for one count of child endangerment. Hilliker’s sentence for a second count of child endangerment was suspended by the judge. His charge of abuse or neglect of a child was dismissed.

According to previous reports, Stone County deputies were sent to a home in November for a four-year-old boy found unresponsive. The boy was taken to Kansas City and was in stable condition as of December 4.

A woman accused of multiple charges involving child abuse and endangerment out of stone county has pleaded guilty.

Dessa Barton is one of four people being charged after a four-year-old boy was found unresponsive and in critical condition in November of 2020.

The Stone County Sheriff said the boy suffered various injuries consistent with physical abuse…As well as extreme malnutrition.

Detectives found a wooden crate made of pallets at the home where they believe the child was caged for extended periods of time.

“He had extensive bruising to his head and was severely malnourished, weighing only about 25 pounds,” Selby said. “He was diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Trauma.”

The deputies discovered during their investigation the boy was being kept inside a crate.
A bowl and spoon were found under the floor of the crate, and children’s clothing and shoes were found next to the crate. One of Barton’s co-defendants, Katherine Kost, told investigators the child was kept in the crate overnight.

Barton told Stone County detectives the child was “self-harming” by clawing at their face and banging their head against objects.

She admitted she did not take the child to the doctor for any of the injuries which were experienced by what she termed self-harming.

She also stated she was trying to get Medicaid to take the child to a doctor but “it had been delayed due to COVID-19.”
The child was taken to Cox South Hospital where a forensic nurse informed investigators the boy had both new and old injuries, and the injuries suffered by the child could not have taken place by self-harming actions the mother described to law enforcement. The child was airlifted to Kansas City for further treatment because of the extreme malnutrition.

“All of the charges were based on [Barton’s] failure to act to either protect the child, get medical attention, or provide the care and custody necessary for his well-being,” Selby said.
Selby said the sentence for the class B felony of child abuse or neglect carries a 5 to 10 year punishment range.

“I intend to ask for what I believe is an appropriate sentence for the injuries suffered by this child,” Selby said.

The judge better not go soft on this bitch.

He is such a beautiful little boy and he appeared to be hitting his milestones.

Any acting out behavior more than likely began after this woman started abusing and neglecting the boy.

Was it the drugs or the penis because she appeared very loving and affectionate with the child and the child appeared happy and healthy in the pictures from 2017 on her FB.

She could've taken the child to the ER, and they wouldn't have been turned away regardless. There is also that thing called "Care Credit" that you can use for any medical purpose even veterinary care for your pets. If you're really concerned for your child's welfare, you will get them to a clinic or hospital regardless of whether or not you can "afford" it.

A woman who was charged alongside three other people after a boy was found unresponsive was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to child abuse.
Katherine Kost, 55, got 12 years with the Missouri Department of Corrections after she pleaded guilty to a child abuse charge she received in November 2020. In 2020, Stone County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call in Billings about a 4-year-old boy who was unresponsive due to physical abuse and extreme malnutrition. Kost said the boy had been self-harming, according to a probable cause statement from the SCHO.
The other people charged in the case are Dessa A. Barton — who is the mother of the boy — William McClendon, and Richard Hilliker. McClendon and Barton are spending 12 years each for the abuse of a child. Hilliker is spending five years for a child endangerment charge.
