On Thursday, Dec. 28, the 5-month-old baby was brought to Shady Grove Hospital around 9 p.m. for trouble breathing and eating. The child then had to be transferred to the Children’s National Medical Center for severe and unexplained injuries to the head and body.
Child protective services contacted Montgomery County Police and detectives with the special victims unit went to the hospital to investigate.

There, they learned that 25-year-old Oliver Hernandez Caballero was at home alone with the 5-month-old before the child had to be brought to the hospital.

Following their investigation, police determined that Hernandez Caballero was responsible for causing the child’s injuries.

After unexplained injuries were found on the child’s head and body, including skull fractures, brain hemorrhage, rib fractures and bruising, she was transferred to the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., according to charging documents.

The brain hemorrhage was causing her to have difficulty breathing and possible seizures, and Children’s National Medical Center found additional injuries, such as multiple lacerations to the liver and other abdomen injuries, charging documents indicated.
During a voluntary interview with police on Friday, Hernandez Caballero admitted to shaking and punching his daughter on Dec. 28 before he called 911, charging documents stated.

Also, he said that he noticed his daughter was having trouble breathing after he punched her in the stomach and admitted this was not the first time he shook or punched her, charging documents said.

He is a paraeducator. The school has placed him on on administrative leave.

Oliver Hernandez-Caballero, 26, of Damascus, was sentenced to 14 years in prison following his jury conviction of first-degree child abuse.
In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the Honorable Jeannie Cho sentenced defendant, Oliver Hernandez-Caballero, 26, of Damascus, to 25 years in prison suspending all but 14 years to serve and five years of supervised probation upon release for the abuse of his five-month-old baby daughter.
Doctors said the baby had a skull fracture, brain hemorrhages, retinal hemorrhages, lacerations to internal organs, internal bleeding, rib fractures in various stages of healing and bruising to the body. The injuries were at various stages of healing when the child was examined.

A police investigation determined that the defendant shook and punched the five-month-old prior to calling 911. During a voluntary interview, Hernandez-Caballero admitted to shaking and punching the baby, according to court documents.

Silly me, while reading the title, for some stupid reason, I thought he confessed right away.
Not saying that makes it better, but letting the doctors know immediately would at least show remorse and that you care more for the child than yourself. But of course he didn't!

14 years is actually surprising. Wish it was longer, but so many people get a slap on the wrist unless (or even when) the child dies.
