A mother and her boyfriend were charged this week in connection to the death of a 3-year-old boy.

Court documents reveal disturbing new details about an alleged attack that left Zeus Cox dead.

Police and medics say they found him unresponsive, lying on the bedroom floor inside the home. They also noticed bruises all over his body, covering his stomach and chest.

Police on Tuesday arrested Jermaine Garnes and Crystal Cox, both 31 years old, at their Howell Street home.

The couple was arraigned Wednesday on charges of murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, aggravated battery and battery resulting in death of a person less than 14 years old.

Magistrate Sarah Wyatt entered a no contact order blocking the couple from seeing Garnes' 9-year-old son.

They are being held at the jail without bond. Jury trials are scheduled for December 21st.

Crystal Cox said she lived at the Howell Street home for about a month with her son, Zeus Cox, as well Garnes and his son, according to a probable cause affidavit accompanying the charges

The couple told police the boy bruised himself after falling into a table and falling off his bike. They also told police he vomited several times the night of July 4th and they woke up to find him dead.

But Garnes' son told police a different story: That he called his father a name and Garnes "took his anger out on Zeus," according to the affidavit, which summarizes his forensic interview with detectives.

Prosecutors say Cox also texted Garnes June 29 to get Zeus Cox a swim shirt "so no one can see the bruises," according to a summary of the text message in the affidavit.

An autopsy found lacerations of the kidney, small intestine ruptures, rib fractures and internal bleeding. A medical examiner determined the blunt force trauma likely caused the boy's fever and vomiting.

A man described as a mentor to Garnes told police Garnes frantically arrived at his house on July 5 for an emergency.

When the man asked if Garnes killed the child, Garnes replied he thought he did and described beating the child with a belt, according to an account of the conversation in the affidavit.

A man told police the Garnes had a drinking problem.

Crystal Cox allegedly admitted to the man's wife that Garnes killed the boy and she was "going to get in trouble for covering it up," according to an account of the conversation in the affidavit.

Court records show Crystal Cox was convicted of neglect of a dependent in Clinton County in 2013.

Jurors on Thursday found a Lafayette mother guilty of murder and neglect in the death of her 3-year-old son.

The prosecution and defense also made their closing arguments.

The state outlined Crystal Cox's multiple theories and cover-ups regarding her son's extensive bruising and internal injuries.

Her defense attorney argued Cox didn't know about the alleged abuse by her one-month boyfriend, Jermaine Garnes.

Jurors apparently didn't buy that argument, returning guilty verdicts on all counts after only an hour-and-a-half of deliberation.

As News 18 reported, Cox and her son lived in a Lafayette apartment with Garnes' and his son, who testified on Tuesday he saw his father repeatedly punch 3-year-old Zeus Cox in the chest shortly before the toddler's death.

Garnes will face a jury in October on murder and neglect on charges.

While prosecutors say he's responsible for the deadly blows, they argued Cox was an accomplice and that her son laid dead for hours before the couple called 911.

They accused Cox of putting on an act for detectives and crying fake, "crocodile" tears.

A medical examiner told jurors Tuesday the child's dozens of injuries were similar to those seen in high-speed car accidents.

"That's unsurvivable," Deputy Prosecutor Elyse Madigan said Thursday. "Any one of these probably could have killed him. All of them -- it's atrocious."

Cox's defense attorney, Kirk Freeman, said the state was too aggressive with its accomplice prosecution.

"We don't know what Crystal knew and when she knew it," Freeman told jurors. "That's the missing element."

Crystal Cox was sentenced on Tuesday to 55 years after being convicted of murdering her 3-year-old son. A jury in May found the Lafayette mother guilty of murder and neglect in the death of her 3-year-old son.

Cox was ordered to serve 53 years at the Indiana DOC, and 2 years on probation.

A jury has convicted a Michigan man of murder and other charges in the beating death of a 3-year-old boy in Lafayette.

Jermaine Garnes was convicted of murder, neglect resulting in death, aggravated battery resulting in death and battery on a person under 14 resulting in death.
Garnes and his girlfriend, Crystal Lynn Cox, were both charged in August 2021 in connection with the death of 3-year-old Zeus Cox. The little boy was found dead on a bedroom floor with bruises on his chest, stomach and other areas of his body.

The couple gave police conflicting accounts. Cox said he had fallen on concrete and later ran into a table. Garnes trold police Zeus had fallen off his bike.
Witnesses told police Garnes struck the 3-year-old with his fist.

An autopsy revealed the 3-year-old died from multiple blunt force trauma injuries to his abdomen that ruptured the boy’s intestines and caused rib fractures and internal bleeding.
Cox was found guilty of murder, neglect resulting in death, aggravated battery resulting in death, and battery on a person under 14 resulting in death last May and was sentenced to 53 years in prison.

A Michigan man was sentenced Friday to 65 years in prison on murder and other charges in the Indiana beating death of his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son.

Tippecanoe County Superior Court Judge Randy Williams called Jermaine Garnes “the worst of the worst” before giving the West Bloomfield, Michigan, man, the maximum prison sentence, WLFI-TV reported.
Tippecanoe County Prosecutor Pat Harrington called it one of the worst murder cases he’s ever seen.

“This child was three years old, was autistic, was non-verbal, could not cry out for help,” Harrington said. “I don’t know how much more evil you could have in a case.”
Cox was found guilty last May of murder, neglect resulting in death, aggravated battery resulting in death, and battery on a person under 14 resulting in death and was sentenced to 53 years in prison.
