A Colorado mother has pleaded guilty in the death of her 3-year-old son in a house fire on Christmas Eve.

Prosecutors said that Vanessa Jenkins pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide on Tuesday in the 2018 fire that killed Lane Cullen in Craig. They alleged that she negligently and unreasonably put her son in a situation that resulted in his death.

An affidavit supporting Jenkins's arrest said police found a melted cigarette lighter near the spot where the boy's body was found.

Does anyone have anymore info on this story? Shit don’t add up to me. These r the facts I’ve gathered .. it happened on xmas eve at 10:20 am. The 3yr old boy started the fire in his room and he was the only one who died bc responders couldn’t get to him. Those f the facts but my questions r why did mom plead guilty and where the fuck was mom while the boy was lighting himself on fire? Why couldn’t she get to him n drag him out the house ? Didn’t she hear the screams? And why didn’t he run when he was on fire? Why did he just stay confined to his room literally burning to death?

I read in local news that the mom was asleep. The kid was a known fire starter. He’d started his bed on fire at least twice before. Apparently, she left a lighter out again and this last time was when he set his room on fire and she was asleep on the couch. She woke up and the fire was already out of control. The fire fighters couldn’t get through the house. They even tried to bore through the outside of the house into his room, but it was too late. I guess mom’s story was changing throughout the investigation as well... She claimed she was injured and burned from trying to save him, but clearly was not. Fire must be the worst way to go. Autopsy showed he died of a combine of thermal burns and smoke inhalation. Poor kid must have been so scared!

Oh apparently and most importantly, the safety mechanisms from the lighters had been removed. What a fucking dumb bitch!

Goddamn things are there for a reason.

I was supposing she had locked the kid in, not realizing he'd taken a lighter in with him, and that's why she was charged. I could see the lack of the safety mechanisms leading to charges too.

Vanessa Jenkins

Since she took a plea which will more than likely be a slap on the wrist we will probably never know exactly what happened in the home that night.

She has to live with what she did or did not do that night and if she feels any remorse for failing her son.

Vanessa Jenkins was sentenced to 90 days in jail and four years of probation during her sentencing hearing Monday afternoon in Moffat County Court. Jenkins will have to serve 88 days behind bars due to a 2-day credit from her original arrest.

Jenkins was taken into custody following the sentencing hearing Monday.
Handing down the sentence, Judge O’Hara told Jenkins to take advantage of the opportunity to get the help she needs.

“I’m not saying you’re broken, but you need to take advantage of this,” Judge O’Hara said. “Get the help that you need, and take advantage of this opportunity you’ve been given.”

Judge O’Hara also ordered Jenkins to complete a rehabilitation program for substance abuse, and that she must report to her probation officer immediately following her release from jail.
