- State and local authorities are asking for the public's help to find a 4-year-old Kentucky girl who hasn't been seen in more than a year.

On Thursday morning, National Missing Persons Day, Attorney General Daniel Cameron's office asked the public to be on the lookout for Serenity Ann McKinney. According to a poster distributed by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, concerned family members haven't seen McKinney since Christmas Eve of 2020.

Brad Davis, Serenity's grandfather, told WDRB News on Thursday that he was the one who recently filed the missing person's report with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. He said he's concerned now that so much time has passed since he's seen his granddaughter.

"We just want her safe and we hope that she is," said Aundria Wainscott, who identified herself as Serenity's grandmother.

Wainscott said she spoke with Serenity over the phone a few weeks before Father's Day in 2021, but since then, there has been no contact.

Authorities do not know Serenity's last location, but believe it was somewhere in the Shelby, Jefferson or Bullitt County areas.

She is described as a white 4-year-old with blond hair, blue eyes and a possible birth mark on her stomach.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said while the report was filed in Shelby County, they're not sure if Serenity is in the county or if she is somewhere else. Investigators on the case are asking anyone with information to give them a call.

"Just based on the timeframe on how long it's been since she's been seen and nobody can seem to produce her whereabouts, it does lead us to believe she could possibly be in danger," said Capt. Blake Lisby with the sheriff's office. "All just unknown factors at this point."

According to Lisby, Serenity's mother was located in Jefferson County, but he said getting answers has been difficult.

"(She) has still not produced Serenity for us and has not cooperated with us up to this point in the investigation," Lisby said. "(She's) refusing to speak us with about the whereabouts of her daughter."

Lisby said investigators are currently working leads.

According to online jail documents, Catherine McKinney and Dakota Hill were booked on Sunday.

Capt. Blake Lisby of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said the pair were arrested for a charge of Custodial Interference.

Catherine's daughter, 4-year-old Serenity Ann McKinney, has not been seen since Christmas Eve of 2020, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. Last week, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron's office asked for the public's help to locate Serenity.

that's not even close to a child that is smiling, she was apparently grimacing for a picture and was told to smile and that was the best she could do.

Detectives with Kentucky State Police never gave up on the case since Serenity McKinney disappeared back in Decenber of 2020.

On Friday these detectives located the body of the little girl in a wooded area in West Point near the Jefferson-Bullitt Co. line.

The remains are now with the Kentucky Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

No word yet on cause of death.

But detectives have now charged Serenity’s mother, 21-year-old Catherine McKinney and her boyfriend 26-year-old Dakota Hill with murder and abuse of a corpse.

At the time, both McKinney and Hill were in custody already charged with custodial interference.

The discovery of the body brought the upgraded charges.

The case is still under investigation, but the allegation is that the couple killed the little girl and then dumped her body.

Not guilty pleas were entered on their behalf. Their bonds were originally set at $1 million each. A public defender for Catherine McKinney told the judge that her client is seven months pregnant. Based on a lack of criminal history, the public defender asked the judge to allow her to be released on a $20,000 surety bond.

But the judge declined to do so, keeping both Hill and McKinney's bonds at $1 million.

Bullitt County Coroner Dave Billings said DNA results from the Kentucky State Police crime lab confirmed the body found near the Jefferson-Bullitt County line six months ago as Serenity McKinney.

Her body was taken to the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

Serenity was reported missing on Jan. 31, after extended families told authorities they hadn’t seen the girl since Christmas 2020.

The 4-year-old’s body was found on Feb. 18 in a wooded area near the 1300 block of Skyview Road in West Point, Ky.

On Feb. 21, murder charges were filed for Serenity’s mother, 21-year-old Catherine McKinney, and her boyfriend, 26-year-old Dakota Hill. They were also charged with abuse of a corpse in relation to Serenity’s death.

"Dakota Hill killed Serenity," said Catherine's lawyer.

Catherine's lawyer went on to say Catherine and Serenity were victims of abuse by a man named Dakota Hill, who was Catherine's boyfriend at the time at the time of the incident (he is not Serenity's father). The lawyer said that abuse ultimately led to Serenity's death, which is why Catherine accepted the plea deal.

"The definition of manslaughter that we implied, in this case, involves someone allowing a person under 12 to suffer sufficient physical injury that they are killed," said Taylor.

Catherine McKinney is not eligible for probation or shock probation, which means she has to serve at least 85% of her sentence. In other words, if the judge approves the plea deal in the formal sentencing hearing on April 26, Catherine will have to serve a minimum of 10 years.

"This plea deal is an agreement we made in order to secure her testimony in the case against Dakota Hill," said Taylor.

The man charged with killing 4-year-old Serenity McKinney was sentenced to 50 years in prison on Thursday.

Dakota Hill was the boyfriend of Serenity's mother, Catherine "Abby" McKinney.

He pleaded guilty to murder, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence charges back in May.

Serenity's body was found in West Point, Kentucky in February of last year. An autopsy revealed she was found in a suitcase filled with a sand-like substance, and had fractured bones.



Serenity's grandmother, Melody Roller, emotionally watched as Hill was sentenced. She says no amount of time is enough.

"Because she deserved more. She deserved to live her life," she said.

Before being sent to prison, Hill apologized to Roller and loved ones for the pain he's caused.

"I think of Serenity every single day and the time we had together. And I think about how my choices has taken that away for everyone and cut her life short," he said.
