An 8-year-old boy died and three other people were wounded when a gunman opened fire at an Alabama mall Friday, authorities said.

A 22-year-old man has been charged in the July 3 shootout at Alabama’s Riverchase Galleria that killed an 8-year-old boy and wounded three others.

Montez Coleman faces a capital murder charge in the death of the boy, Royta De’Marco Giles Jr., and one count each of second-degree assault for the injuries caused to a juvenile girl, an adult male and an adult female, WBMA reported.

Giles, who was shot in the head, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham. Police said the three other victims were all treated and released Friday evening and that more suspected gunmen are being sought, AL.com reported.

All of the victims are considered innocent bystanders by police.

“Our community is heartbroken,‘' Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis said during a Sunday news conference. “The officers who were on the scene will forever bear the image of an innocent child who died in their arms.”

Investigators have determined Coleman got into a verbal altercation with a group of males near the food court on the first floor of the state’s largest mall.

At some point during the argument, Coleman armed himself with a 5.56-caliber pistol and fired towards the group of men who returned fire, WBMA reported.

Coleman was taken into custody without incident in the parking deck of the adjacent Hyatt Regency Hotel shortly after the shooting, AL.com reported.

Royta’s mother, who did not want her last name used, said she and her three children were waiting to get into Children’s Place, a child’s clothing store, AL.com reported. Because of coronavirus precautions, the store only allowed a limited number of people inside at a time.

That’s when shots rang out.

“We heard the gunshots and I grabbed them and we hit the ground,‘' the woman told AL.com. “When we all got up, (Royta) was the only one who didn’t get up.”

While Coleman was charged with capital murder and three counts of second-degree assault, authorities have not said whether any shots he fired were the ones that the struck the victims.

Alabama law allows a person to be charged with capital murder if, during the commission of a felony crime, someone is killed, whether that person directly caused the death or not.

22-year-old Montez Moses Miracle Coleman of Birmingham got into an argument with five other males on the first floor of the Galleria near the food court around 3:15 p.m. Friday.

Coleman armed himself with a 5.56-caliber pistol that was concealed in his backpack, Derzis said.

“He fired his weapon at the group of males, and several of them immediately returned fire,” the chief said. “We believe that no one involved in the initial argument was injured and all four of the victims in this case were innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire.”

Police said they aren’t sure what the argument was about yet, but they know that at least three guns were fired. They are not sure how many shots went off.

“Thank God more people weren’t hit. Those bullets were flying through that mall,” Derzis said. “It’s incredible that more weren’t hurt.”

Two 19-year-olds were arrested in connection with a shooting at the Hoover Riverchase Galleria that left an 8-year-old boy dead and three other people injured last Friday.

King Gary Williams and Demetrius Dewayne Jackson Jr. of Birmingham were arrested and charged with Capital Murder after turning themselves into police. Both were being held without bond.

8 year old Royta Giles, Jr. and his family were innocent bystanders shopping at the mall when the child was hit by a bullet and killed.

Earlier this week, Hoover police arrested 22-year-old Montez Moses Coleman of Birmingham in connection with the shooting. He was also charged with Capital Murder and held without bond.

Police said the shooting was the result of an ongoing feud between the men and they had hand guns hidden inside backpacks they carried into the mall.

Hoover police said they have been in conversations with the Riverchase Galleria management this week to make recommendations about how to make the mall safer.

Three young men charged in the July Riverchase Galleria shootout that killed 8-year-old Royta Giles Jr. have been indicted in the boy’s death.

A Jefferson County grand jury this month issued indictments against Montez Moses Miracle Coleman, 22, King Gary Williams, 19, and Demetrius Dewayne Jackson Jr., also 19. All three were indicted on capital murder and three counts of second-degree assault. The indictments were made public Tuesday.

On July 3, Royta was killed when he, his mother, Jesslyn Layfield, stepfather Anthony Jones, and sisters Trinity, 5, and Marlee, 4, were waiting to go into the Children’s Place to buy new outfits for the Fourth of July. Police said Coleman, Williams and Jackson exchanged gunfire and when the shooting stopped, Royta was motionless on the mall floor, surrounded by his family. He had been shot in the head and would be pronounced dead within hours. The other three victims survived.

Fighting over rap lyrics
[...]
The suspects have all claimed each fired in self-defense – from each other. At a preliminary hearing in the case held in August - which lasted more than 6 ½ hours – it was stated at least 12 rounds were fired in just four seconds near the food court of the state’s largest mall during a dispute that possible started because of a previous “beef” over rap lyrics.

Additional testimony showed one of the defendants fired his AR-15 style pistol through a book bag. The gun jammed after the first round, but he had about 75 rounds of ammunition in the backpack – nearly 50 rounds were in two gun magazines and 24 were stuffed in a sock. Two other defendants, according to witnesses, raised their shirts to show they, too, had weapons shortly before the gunfight commenced.

Though all parties agreed no one went to the mall that day with the intent to kill, the resulting carnage happened because of their “willingness and spoken or unspoken agreement to get in this gunfight,”

What is he doing with his mouth? 30 years will remove his violent actions from murdering innocent children! Those sentences should have been consecutive! My condolences to the Giles Family.
