The Prince George County Police Department (PGPD) said a six-year-old boy has died days after being injured in a shooting at a Fourth of July block party in Temple Hills.

Police said that around 7:50 p.m., they responded to the report of a shooting in the 4500 block of Akron Street.

Once there, police found a six-year-old boy who had been shot, as well as two other people.
The boy was taken to the hospital where he died late Saturday night. He was identified as six-year-old Ahsan Payton of Washington, DC.

PGPD detectives are seeking information on this case at (301) 516-2512. They are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case.

“We will be charging them once they are identified with the maximum charges and seeking the maximum penalties because this is something that we cannot stand for in this community,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy said on Friday. “I certainly will not stand for it.”

The Prince George’s County Police Department arrested a man in connection with the deadly shooting of a 6-year-old boy from Washington, D.C., from July 4.

Officers, with help from four other task forces, including U.S. Marshals, arrested Rakeem Gilgeours, 33, on Thursday for the death of Ashan Payton, 6.

A Prince George’s County judge handed down a 60-year prison sentence Friday in connection with a Fourth of July neighborhood shooting that left a 6-year-old boy dead in Temple Hills.
During Friday's sentencing hearing, the judge described Gilgeours’ actions as "egregious" and referred to the incident as a "wild wild west shootout" that never should have happened.

Gilgeours was not convicted of murder, but was found guilty of first-degree assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and illegal possession of a firearm.
The judge imposed the maximum sentence on each count, ordering them to be served consecutively:
  • 25 years for first-degree assault
  • 20 years for use of a firearm
  • 15 years for illegal possession
That totals 60 years in prison.
