Jacob Scott Shutter was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in connection to the July 1, 2022 fentanyl death of his 4-year-old son, Eli Jude Schutter.

The punishment was a minimum of 4 years, 2 months to 15 years of imprisonment.

His earliest release date is 11/17/2026 and the maximum discharge date is 09/17/2037

Eli’s cause of death was “the toxic effects of para-fluorofentanyl and fentanyl.

Shutter did not make a statement at his sentencing.

Testimony was provided during the preliminary exam last fall by first responders and investigators at the scene of the Grant Township mobile home where the couple lived with Eli and their six other children — the youngest of whom was an infant. Investigators reported finding drugs and drug paraphernalia in several locations throughout the home.

Testimony also described deplorable conditions. “It smelled like a dumpster in the city in the summer,” testified Oceana County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Brown “Flies were everywhere.”
