Christopher Paul Johnson, 39, and Kourtany Johnson, 31, were taken into custody on March 3 after reporting that their 1-year-old daughter was unresponsive that morning, the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to a probable cause affidavit police arrived at the Johnsons’ home where they found the baby and another 3-year-old child who was reportedly covered in dried food, glitter, and animal hair. In the affidavit, the parents were reportedly described as “erratic,” and the home as unsanitary.

The parents’ claim that their 1-year-old was found unresponsive on the morning of March 3 was not the entire story — according to the medical examiner, she had already been dead for 18 hours when she was found, police said.
KWTV reported that Christopher Johnson had been watching the baby the day before when he allegedly opened up a bottle of methadone near the girl. According to the affidavit, he reportedly told police that he turned around briefly and then saw that the girl had spilled the methadone on herself and considered that she could have ingested some of it. He reportedly told police that he didn’t believe it was enough to hurt her, but he did tell Kourtany Johnson to take the girl to the hospital.
According to the affidavit, Kourtany Johnson allegedly refused to take her to get medical attention because she feared that authorities would take her children away from her.

The medical examiner determined that the baby had been dead for 18 hours before she was found on the morning of March 3 and may have died as early as noon on March 2, KWTV reported.

Conditions of the Home
Investigators found severe neglect inside the home, including:
  1. Animal feces throughout the house
  2. Rotting food, trash, and flies in living areas and bedrooms
  3. Maggots and cockroaches inside the home
  4. Empty prescription and methadone bottles scattered on the floor

There is no way you wouldn't know for sure if they ingested it. Liquid methadone tastes worse than any cough syrup you've ever tasted. And it is strong. Even if the child did not immediately react to the taste, you could smell it on their breath, even if they had it on them.
Why didn't HE call for help?? Trying to blame just her. Smh. Like YOU are the one who left your medication unattended! She's just as much to blame, but he can't just pawn it off on her.

I don’t understand why you’re allowed to have custody of your kids when both parents are on methadone??? I hope the detox in jail is absolute hell for them…
That, I don't necessarily agree with. There are a lot of people who are very productive on methadone and are on it to genuinely get better. Now maybe they should be monitored more carefully. I've kind of always thought that, even when it is just one parent.
There are also people who are on it (like myself) for pain management reasons. Now that it can be nearly impossible to get opiates (at least where I am), clinics are filling up with the disabled. I know a very nice couple who go to my clinic who fit into this category. I'm not sure if they have children, but if they did, it would be horrible if they lost them because they want pain relief. And technically, you can't go for that reason - even though it's well known what the truth is with such patients, we have to say that we are addicts. Which, as someone who has had addiction issues, I'm fine with. But I feel horrible for the people who never have had any type of traditional addiction that have to lie.

Oh, and don't worry. It will be absolute hell. And they deserve every bit of it and more! Methadone is worse to detox from than heroin, so they'll have fun. :angelic:

@Aedia I’m sorry you live with chronic pain! I didn’t know it was treatment for anything other than drug withdrawal. If both parents are on methadone for drug related issues that’s my concern.
Ah, it's fine, it's been life long for me. I feel lucky in a way that I was born with it and never knew anything else. Hope that makes sense lol
And I can definitely get that! Addicts can be very dangerous around children. The tons of stories here are proof. Sadly, not everyone goes to clinics for the right reason either - they think they'll just a cheap, legal high and cheat the system. I've written on here about a female where I go who negligently let her child get into her medication as well. Idiots! Parents should be monitored at very least.
Tbh - most people don't know that about methadone clinics. It's a relatively recent phenomenon since the opiate crackdowns and is an kind of an open secret. It is not supposed to be pain management. The disabled have to lie about why they want to enter the program, but they're desperate for relief.

@Aedia I have 2 family member who have CRPS which is a horrible pain disorder, they suffer so much and rely on opiates for bad days. One gets nerve ablations and spinal blocks it’s terrible, another had a battery pack that would shock their nerves implanted in their back. I pray someday there’s a cure or at least a suitable and effective treatment for all those who suffer from chronic pain! Sending you a gentle hug
