Kyron Zarco was in his Athens home at the Hallmark Mobile Home Park in March 2024 when bullets came through the wall, hitting him in the chest and killing him.
Prosecutors said Jayden Brown, Dakious Echols and Desmontrez Mathis drove to the neighborhood that day to target a rival gang.
On February 6, Mathis was sentenced to life in prison.
“You chose this gang life, and life of violence, what did it get you? Prison,” said Judge Lawton Stephens in an Athens courtroom.
Jayden Brown and Dakious Echols pleaded guilty and were sentenced to life in prison in January. Mathis’s attorney asked the judge to give him the same sentence and nothing more.
“Our system is one of belief and redemption. This is not a case of, despite the arguments that the state has made, of a man who has a completely malignant heart,” said Leslie Jones, Mathis’s defense attorney.
