LAWRENCE, Kan. — A Missouri woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a car plunged into the Kansas River and the body of her 5-year-old daughter was pulled from the water.

The Lawrence, Kansas, police department says Scharron Renea Dingledine of Columbia, Missouri, was arrested on a first degree murder charge related to the girl's death. She also faces an attempted murder charge stemming from critical injuries to her 1-year-old son, who remains hospitalized.

Police say the children were passengers in the vehicle that sunk Friday afternoon in the river in downtown Lawrence. The toddler and the mother were rescued.

The vehicle was pulled from the river by search and recovery crews.

Hours before allegedly killing her daughter, a Columbia woman was released from a 24-hour hold in a mental institution, stole a car and drove to Lawrence, according to the victim’s father.

Scharron Renea Dingledine, 26, faces charges of first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder. The Douglas County district attorney wrote in charging documents that she intentionally drove her vehicle into the Kansas River near downtown Lawrence on Friday with her two children inside.

She and her 1-year-old son were rescued. Her 5-year-old daughter, Amiyah Bradley, was found dead in the river on Saturday.

“She could have reached out,” said Clinton Bradley, Amiyah’s father. “She didn’t want anybody to have her kids. She thought someone was going to take them from her.”

Dingledine was admitted to a psychiatric institution for 24 hours after a domestic violence dispute with her current boyfriend — the 1-year-old’s father, Bradley said.

A neighbor called police when she heard banging and screaming from Dingledine’s home, the neighbor told Bradley.

After being released from the institution, Dingledine was supposed to meet with an official with the Children’s Division of the Missouri Department of Social Services. That prompted her fear of losing her children, said Bradley, who said he’s spoken at length with Dingledine’s boyfriend about the hours leading up to his daughter’s death.

Dingledine was released on Friday morning and soon stole her boyfriend’s car and drove west, Bradley said. At some point, she ran out of gas and stole another car.

The 1-year-old boy is fighting to survive in a Lawrence hospital. If he does pull through, Bradley said, he’ll likely “never be the same kid physically or mentally.”

A 26-year-old mother who confessed to police she intentionally drove her car into a Kansas river in a bid to kill herself and her two young children has pleaded guilty to murder, a court heard on Monday.

Sharon Dingledine, from Columbia, Missouri, entered the plea against one charge of first-degree murder for the death of her five-year-old daughter Amiyah.

She also pleaded guilty to one charge of attempted first-degree murder on December 17, in Douglas County Court in Lawrence, Kansas, after her one-year-old son Elijah was rescued and survived the ordeal.

I get this ... i wouldn't want anyone else to have my children either. I would be really afraid of it.
They make it sound selfish but it don't think it is ... I think there is real fear here.
Plus she was suicidal ... and healthy, not mentally ill people are not.

Scharron Dingledine was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years for the first-degree murder charge, and nearly 13 years for the attempted murder charge.

Prosecutors said she drove her car into the river near Lawrence in August 2018. She and her one-year-old son, Elijah, were rescued. The body of her five-year-old daughter, Amiyah Bradley, was recovered the next day.

Dingledine told police she drove into the river in an attempt to kill herself and her children. She said she knew neither child could swim and would likely die.

Less than 24 hours earlier, Dingledine was released from a psychiatric facility, where she had admitted herself following a domestic dispute with her boyfriend.

A probable cause affidavit revealed that after Dingledine was released, her boyfriend agreed to take her to a shelter. But as he stopped at a store, the woman drove off in his car, with the children inside.

She later stole another car after running out of gas, and spent the night in the vehicle.

The next day, feeling 'depressed and worried about the consequences of her actions', Dingledine drove to the Kansas river, and let her children out to play around and dip their feet in the water.

The 26-year-old said she decided the river was a good way to kill herself, and she decided to kill her children because she 'didn't want anyone else to have them'.

She told detectives she accelerated into the river while the children were unrestrained in the front seat, according to the affidavit.

Elijah was pronounced dead at the scene before being revived by paramedics.

He has been critically injured by the encounter, and according to Amiyah's dad, Clint Bradley, the toddler will likely 'never be the same kid mentally or physically'.
