A Clay County toddler has passed away after reportedly being the victim of child abuse.

Scarlette Olivia Newsom, 2, was taken off life support Thursday afternoon. She was pronounced brain dead and her organs were donated, according to the child's aunt, Lauren Raindl.

Scarlette Newsom had been brought into the Clay County Memorial Hospital emergency room around 9:38 p.m. on Oct. 15, unresponsive with severe bruising around her head and body.

She was transported to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth for medical treatment.

Joshua Thomas Fulbright and Sarah Elizabeth Newsom, both 23, are charged with one count each of injury to a child resulting in serious bodily injury – a first-degree felony.

Fulbright and Newsom each agreed to a consensual interview with the deputies.

Based on the interview, it was determined that Fulbright struck the girl with his right hand, causing a large bruise to the left side of her head around Oct. 11.

The girl also suffered numerous bruises on her head, arms and back.

Fulbright said Newsom was present in the room when he struck the child at his residence.

He said that a day after the assault, the child began having seizure-like behavior and was vomiting several times a day.

Newsom admitted to slapping the child routinely and causing a large scratch to the left side of the girl's neck to bring her out of seizure behavior.

The child then became unconscious, which caused them to bring her into the emergency room for treatment.

I've never heard of slapping someone repeatedly to bring them out of a seizure. Especially not a baby, a seizure lasts as long as it lasts.

So no one believes them, it's a stupid excuse for beating on her. Mama especially needs to be slapped until she's having a seizure and then slapped some more.

We already know how this will end the mother will agree to testify against the man she allowed to abuse her child and will be given a slap on the wrist.

Looking at that sweet little cutie I just can't imagine a fking grown ass man pulling his arm back and hitting that baby. What a sick, demented, stupid, coward excuse for a punk ass man-boy. And she ain't no better. Bitch ought to have her reproductive organs removed with a rusty spoon.

No jury was selected Friday for the trial of a Dean man accused of beating a toddler who died a week later, Clay County District Clerk Marianne Bowles said.

The trial of Joshua Thomas Fulbright, 23, of Dean is not being held this week since an attempt to seat a jury was unsuccessful Friday at the Clay County Courthouse.

Fulbright is charged with felony injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.
Fulbright told responding deputies that on or about Oct. 11, 2018, he came home after work and went into the bedroom he shared with Sarah.

He became angry because Olivia had changed her own diaper and left feces around the room.
Fulbright slapped the child so hard with his right hand that he thought he had broken it.

The toddler had a large bruise on the left side of her head after he struck her, as well as many bruises on her head, arms and back.

The baby was probably tired of sitting in a shitty diaper.

If he was human he would have looked at this angel and hugged her for trying to be a big girl and change her own diaper.

He should have slapped the shit out of Sarah for not changing the baby's diaper

A man accused of severely beating a toddler who later died has been indicted on a murder charge, according to court documents.

Joshua Fulbright

Joshua Thomas Fulbright, 26, was free Thursday from Clay County Jail on a $50,000 bond, according to court and jail records.

A Clay County grand jury recently indicted Fulbright on a murder charge, according to an indictment filed Dec. 21 in the Clay County District Clerk's Office.
Fulbright is accused of killing 2-year-old Scarlette Olivia Newsom in October 2018, according to the indictment.

He told deputies that he hit her so hard he thought his hand was broken, according to allegations in court documents.

The child's family calls her "Olivia," and Fulbright is not her father.

Fulbright was originally charged with injury to a child in connection with an Oct. 11, 2018, incident, according to court documents. Filings for that case transfer to the new murder case file.
Olivia was pronounced brain dead and taken off life support on Oct. 18, 2018, at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth, according to family members.

An attempt to try Fulbright on the injury to a child charge ended in a mistrial Dec. 6, 2019, because a jury could not be seated after attorneys questioned a group of 80 potential jurors, according to court documents.

A change of venue was granted, and Fulbright's murder trial will be at the Montague County Courthouse, possibly later this year.

Fulbright's bail conditions include wearing a GPS ankle monitor and having no contact with co-defendant Sarah Elizabeth Newsom, 26, court documents show.

Sarah is also charged with felony injury to a child, according to court records.

She was free Thursday from Clay County Jail on a $50,000 bond, according to jail and court records.

Court documents give an account of the allegations: About 9:38 p.m. Oct. 15, 2018, Olivia was brought into an emergency room at Clay County Memorial Hospital in Henrietta.
Fulbright told Clay County deputies that he became angry the night of Oct. 11, 2018, because Olivia had changed her own diaper and left feces around the bedroom he shared with Sarah, according to allegations in court documents.

Olivia had a large bruise on the left side of her head after he struck her and bruises on her head, arms and back, according to allegations in court documents.

Fulbright told law-enforcement officers Sarah was in the room when he hit Olivia at their home on State Highway 79, according to allegations in court documents.

The day after he hit her, the child began displaying seizure-like behavior and vomited several times a day, according to allegations in court documents.

Sarah Newsom

Sarah told investigators that she slapped Olivia to bring her out of seizure-like behavior, according to allegations in court documents.

The child lapsed into unconsciousness, and the couple brought her to the emergency room in Henrietta, according to allegations in court documents.

Later, Olivia was transported to Cook Children's Hospital for medical treatment, according to allegations in court documents.

WTF? A mistrial in 2019 because they couldn’t seat a jury-how the fuck is that a mistrial? There was no trial to mistrial. Why wasn’t a change of venue granted immediately and not two years later? Nice that four years later these two pieces of shit may go to trial. And in the meantime they’re free. Lovely

Here's an update - Fulbright finally going to trial.
