Fox 13 anchor arrested
TAMPA - Fox 13's Good Day Tampa Bay morning news anchor Russell Rhodes was arrested Friday night with his pants undone and had his face bashed in after being accused of resisting arrest

Around 10:15 p.m., an off-duty deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spotted a 2006 BMW 325i driving recklessly in a Channelside public parking garage, said J.D. Callaway, spokesman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. The car didn't hit any parked vehicles, but seemed to be weaving erratically, he said.

The deputy stopped the BMW and the driver, Rhodes, got out with his belt undone and his pants unbuttoned, though they were still up. Rhodes appeared to be intoxicated, Callaway said.

According to the deputy, Rhodes tried to walk away from him twice after being ordered to stay put and surrender his car keys. Rhodes didn't identify himself or try to use his name to get out of the situation, Callaway said. When Rhodes tried to run out of the garage, the deputy grabbed him, he said.

He had his car key in his right hand, and when deputies tried to take it, he began waving his hands to keep them from taking it, an arrest affidavit states.

"He began to flail his arms," Callaway said. That's when he was "taken to the ground." Rhodes seemed to have substantial injuries to his face, all of which Callaway said happened when he hit the ground.

He then said he was sorry and that he had panicked because he works for Fox 13, the report states.

Rhodes was taken to Tampa General Hospital for cuts and bruises to his face and then he was booked into the Orient Road Jail, Callaway said. He was charged with obstructing an officer without violence and was released Saturday morning on $500 bail.

Blood samples were taken to see if he was intoxicated. The results should be back next week, Callaway said. Depending on the outcome, he could face an additional charge of driving under the influence.

Rhodes is from Paris, Texas, and has been with Tampa Bay's Fox station since 1994, according to his biography on the Fox Web site. He originally wanted to be an actor or singer, but then realized he couldn't make a living doing it, so he went into broadcast journalism.

Fox 13 offered a brief comment when contacted about the arrest.

"He will not be on the air Monday," said Jessica Moss, spokesperson for Fox 13. For all other questions, she referred to a story the station has on its Web site. The story briefly recounts the incident and said "FOX 13 management is aware of the matter and is reviewing it."

Geez, the nut jobs are already starting in about Po PO brutality, Hello resisting arrest ???? , Fleeing ??

Rhodes "was attempting to reverse his vehicle into other traffic after passing the exit token machine," according to a criminal report affidavit.

The deputy then stopped the car. Rhodes got out and his pants and belt were undone, Callaway said.

"Rhodes appeared to be intoxicated when he got out of the vehicle," said Callaway. "Twice, Rhodes walked away from the deputy after being ordered not to leave. The third time he tried to run out of the garage. The deputy escorted Rhodes back to the patrol car and requested Rhodes give him the key to the vehicle, which Rhodes had in his right hand."

Rhodes refused to surrender the key, said Callaway and began to jerk his hand away from the deputy in an attempt to prevent him from grabbing the key, "requiring the deputy to take Rhodes to the ground to be handcuffed."

After being handcuffed, Rhodes apologized, according to the affidavit.

Russell has been out and proud for years, it's no secret. He is a great guy, please don't bash on him for his sexual orientation. He's certainly no hack, it's a fact that he's one of the most beloved local celebs. in the Tampa Bay area and does a TON of charity work and area promotion. We'll have to wait until we see the tapes, but my God the poor man was beat the hell up! Tampa cops are NOT saints. I know Russell was in the wrong originally and I'm not defending DUI or public indecency, but don't kick a guy at probably the lowest point in his life.

He looks terrible! Looks like that cop used as much 'necessary' force as possible.

His injuries are consistent with the arrest record, the orange stuff is from the hospital and its like Mecurichrome. The cop grabbed him and they fell to the ground, his face must have hit first and did the damage to the left side of his face. Either way he was fucking around and not following commands.

Rhodes didn't identify himself or try to use his name to get out of the situation

I cannot make my mind up whether this is stupid or commendable? Would it have made a difference to his treatment, do you think? I suspect we can agree that it shouldn't, but.....

I used to work for the Fox affiliate here in town. I'm going to ask a couple of friends who still work there and see if they have any details. FOX is very strict about these things...he will have a hard time getting back into the business, or if he was wronged, you might see it on FOX as an expose ....he, he. What he did was clearly wrong and against the law. I just hope this doesn't turn out to be a case of using excessive force.

Unless you were there, it is hard to make sense of what really went down. I'm sure the officers video from his patrol car will be looked over very carefully.

:stupido3: dnk why but when I saw the title and the mugshot I was soooo thinking this was going to go the route of 2girls1cup guy version...

His injuries look like "smashed to the ground" road rash... just what you would expect from a cop tossing you flat while you resisted. He doesn't look like they were tossing punches at him, whacking with a baton or kicking his face.
