Staunch Donald Trump ally Rep. Scott Perry said FBI agents stopped him and seized his cell phone one day after the federal agency raided the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
Perry, a Republican from Pennsylvania, told Fox News that while traveling with his family on Tuesday, three FBI agents approached him, issued him a warrant and demanded he hand over his phone.
“They made no attempt to contact my lawyer, who would have made arrangements for them to have my phone if that was their wish,” he said in a statement to the news outlet.
“I’m outraged — though not surprised — that the FBI under the direction of Merrick Garland’s DOJ, would seize the phone of a sitting Member of Congress.
“My phone contains info about my legislative and political activities, and personal/private discussions with my wife, family, constituents, and friends. None of this is the government’s business.”
The five-term congressman added, “as with President Trump last night, DOJ chose this unnecessary and aggressive action instead of simply contacting my attorneys.”
Perry is the current chairman of the House’s deeply conservative Freedom Caucus and backed Trump’s baseless claims that voter fraud cost him the 2020 election.
He was reportedly in communication with the Trump administration in the days leading up to the Capitol riots.
