Prison workers saved the unnamed inmate's life after finding him bleeding to death following his shocking act of self-mutilation and rushing him to the jail health centre.

The horrific incident happened on Christmas Eve in south-west Spain.

It was not immediately clear if medics had been able to reattach the sex organ.

Local reports said he suffered psychiatric problems.
