According to a release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, 38-year-old Oriana Elias and 39-year-old, step-father, Vincent Gibbs tortured their 16-year-old daughter for hours on August 15, 2021, resulting in her death.
"They became upset with her for sending inappropriate text messages to teenage boys," the release read. "They punished the victim by having her perform strenuous exercises in the hot sun and then beating her with a wooden plank and a belt for several hours."
Elias and Gibbs' other children witnessed the abuse, and prior to police arriving Elias told the children to "lie and not tell the police or paramedics about what they had done to the victim."
Elias was convicted of second-degree murder, torture, child abuse, and two counts of dissuading a witness from reporting a crime. Gibbs was convicted of second-degree murder, torture, and child abuse. Both parents were sentenced to 22 years to life in prison.
