Two parents have appeared in court charged with killing their overweight 16-year-old daughter by allowing her to become morbidly obese.

Teenager Kaylea Titford died from health problems linked to her weight - and was found dead in bed by her mother at the family home in Newtown, Powys, Wales, in October 2020.

Father Alun Titford, 44, and mother Sarah Lloyd-Jones, 39, have been charged with gross negligence manslaughter and causing or allowing the death of a child or vulnerable person.

It is alleged that the pair, of Colwyn, Newtown, between March 24 and October 11, 2020, failed to ensure Ms Titford's dietary needs were met, leading to morbid obesity.

The charge also states 'nor did they ensure she got enough exercise, was in a hygienic condition, had a safe and hygienic environment, her physical health was maintained, or that reasonable medical help was sought.'

The parents appeared before Welshpool Magistrates' Court today, to face the charges.

They stood side by side in the dock wearing face masks.

I don't blame the parents, entirely, at 16, if she had wanted to change, she would have... I made changes at 16 because things embarrassed/offended me. Two more years and she'd have been completely legally responsible for herself. But they surely didn't do her any favors either...

I've been heavy all my life, not like this poor girl, but bigger than other girls my age. My mother made me run laps, monitored my food intake, belittled me and yelled at me about it. My mother who was tall and slim was so embarrassed by having me as a daughter. I resented everything she did or said to me.

I said all that to say, there's only so much parents can do to force their desires about anything onto a kid of 16, maybe if they'd started earlier, like in toddlerhood, healthier eating habits and lifestyle, maybe that would have worked.

But at her age, she had too much freedom to do whatever she wanted to do, simply because she was 16. If they'd held her down and forced all the wrong foods down her throat and hobbled her to her bed all day everyday, then yes they are to blame for all of it.

I remember at 16 that I was starting to gain weight and my step dad, who I was never a big fan of, pointed this out to me. Already depressed and ashamed of my looks because of years of teasing by kids at school, I decided that I would show all of them and went on an extreme diet and exercised by walking miles and miles. I cut my total fat grams down to 20 grams a day. I used coffee as an appetite suppressant and secretly used Dexatrim for years to get and keep my weight down. I desperately wanted to look like my younger size 4 friends and did everything I could to get there.

also we have to keep it mind their financial situation... not everyone can buy the healthy choice to prepare balanced meals.... when it comes to either buy fresh or frozen even foods like fruit and veggies or buy food that are way cheaper as they go farther and keep tummies full you have no choices at all and it is happening more and more often now :( as prices of rents and utilities keep going up and so is the price of food :( .... i remember while growing up the ever present potatoes at every meal , pasta, rice (at times) veggies in the summer cuz we were lucky to have enough land to have a good size garden, any kind a fruits were a treat :) and some meat for our sunday supper when we were lucky.. flap jacks with gravy for lunch etc ... needless to say i was way over weight but none of us went to bed hungry ... and have you ever tried to send even a 6 years old kid outside to play if they didn't want to play they would plop down and pout till it was time to go back indoors and now it is even worse cuz all they seem to want to do is play electronic games or chat online with "friends" and i preferred a good book and still do ... just look around and see how much obesity there is :( also i wonder what "was in a hygienic condition" means, i take it as meaning she was "dirty" somehow but if that is so why would that be the parents' fault.. (unless she had been bed ridden for awhile of course) ? yes she was in a wheelchair but a manual one so nothing wrong with her hands and arms so at 16 she sure could take care of her hygien my husband sure did including transferring himself to bench in bathtub to take a shower

Yeah part of my problem was that we generally was eating the cheapest stuff because I grew up very poor. Because 55/60 years ago women could not get a job and make as much money as a man and my step dad didn't share, his money was his money and mama could only get a job as a woman's dress store working on commission.

You don't know how much I liked you saying you loved to read, reading was my escape, I would read just about anything and if I was forced outside, I would go to the lower portion of the property where this gigantic rock was sunk halfway down and sit on that rock and read until somebody came and got me. One of my favorites was Anne of Green Gables. I had her imagination, just not her bubbly personality, most folks never knew I was even there.

I think who's to blame will depend to some extent on how mentally competent she was. It listed spinal bifida and hydrocephaly as her conditions. If she was mentally impaired to a high enough degree, that lessens her own responsibility and increases that of the parents.
100%, and a lot of fully functioning people don’t have proper knowledge of dietary needs. They weren’t educated about nutrition or can’t afford healthy foods. Some people know they aren’t healthy but don’t know where to start.

I feel lucky to have been raised with an understanding of good nutrition. Learned to create meals that were balanced. Learned to eat a broad variety of healthy choices. There have only been 6 foods I dislike, but even then when push comes to shove I can force myself on 5 of them.

There is a literal wealth of knowledge on the subject to help people gain an understanding of how to eat wisely. The parents had no excuse. They just couldn't be bothered to put in the effort. It is abuse pure and simple.

Bad thing is - the wonderful food pyramid of how to eat "healthy" that we were all tought for years, is actully totally wrong and backwards - when flipped upside down (pretty much 100% opposite of what we were taught, it the actual healthy way to eat... )

Scary that even doctors are not really taught nutrition in school, it is hardly touched on, so even most doctors will tell you the wrong way to eat, unless you are going to one that is an actual nutritionist

The cost of medical care, including dietary guidance, would not have been an issue here. This happened in the UK, Wales to be exact, and therefore the NHS would have covered all medical costs.

This being said, the UK is the fattest nation in Europe and overall consumes a staggeringly high amount of carbs. This is especially true of low-income households.

The actual cause of death was just glazed over while the writer obsessed over her weight.

A medical cause of death was given as 'inflammation and infection in extensive areas of ulceration arising from obesity and it's complications in a girl with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.'
While the parents might not have had much say over how much she was exercising or eating, they definitely should have kept her clean. Infected sores are plain as day that they are infected. Its not some internal infection you cant visually see. They would have had plenty of time to seek help before she full on died from them.

@Hermy The UK doesnt really eat more carbs compared to other EU countries. Take Italy for example, they eat a metric ton of carbs a day and the population as a whole isnt chunky. Like Americans, its the lack of exercise thats got the Brits looking hefty.

Fun side note, if you ever go to the Vatican and head up the old staircase to the roof top, theres actually a sign there telling you if you're over a certain size dont go up because it narrows to only a couple feet wide about half way up and fat Americans keep getting stuck in the stairwell. Notre Dame had a similar sign before it burnt down.

I never climbed up Notre Dame but did so at Sacré Coeur (equivalent to 12+ stories up). The staircase there also narrows incredibly at some points. I could see someone getting wedged there.

Nutritious food is not more expensive. It's just not as easy.
It usually is more expensive (and harder, I agree). In some areas, like inner city USA, it isn't even available locally because there are so few real grocery stores that sell fresh produce. Some areas have no real grocery stores at all, only convenience stores where you can always buy ramen, but never fruits or veggies.

I don't agree. I lived and worked in inner city USA.

The gas stations on every corner, sell single or bunched, fresh fruit. I've actually gone to the corner gas station to buy bananas because I was short for smoothies for myself, niece and nephew. I needed 1 1/2 and bought 4.

There was (moved) a retail giant grocery on one corner. Several other groceries within blocks.

I very rarely ate fast food as a child because my parents couldn't afford it. When we got change to go to the store and pick a treat with our friends.. I always got a pear, my sister a yellow apple. But we all picked fruit or veg except my brother and a few other kids.

Many own kids didn't eat out because I couldn't afford it. It isn't cheaper, it's laziness.

I take care of my dad now. Yesterday for lunch I made us each a huge salad. It probably cost $2.50 maybe $3 each. Including the chicken breast on top.

You can't buy a McDonald's meal for less. It took more effort.

I am 30# overnight. Just putting that out there. Just coming off winter.... So maybe 40... Shut up

I actually have hashimoto and adrenal disease and gained 50# in a matter of months.

I think what people look for is that omg I'm so full I'm gonna be sick feeling?

These 'parents' should be charged with murder, imo, because they made a conscious decision.

Fat kids aren't cute. They're unhealthy.

Parents accused of causing death of their disabled teenage daughter by allowing her to become morbidly obese deny gross negligence manslaughter

The parents of a teenage girl who died from health problems linked to obesity will stand trial over her death after they allegedly neglected her by allowing her to get overweight.

Kaylea Titford, 16, was found dead in her bed by her mother, Sarah Lloyd-Jones, at the family home in Newtown, Powys, in October 2020.

Ms Lloyd-Jones, 39, and Kaylea's father Alun Titford, 44, have been charged with gross negligence manslaughter and causing or allowing the death of a child or vulnerable person.

The charge also states they did not 'ensure she got enough exercise, was in a hygienic condition, had a safe and hygienic environment, her physical health was maintained, or that reasonable medical help was sought.'

The pair, of Newton, Powys, denied the charges at Mold Crown Court. A provisional trial date has been set for January 16, 2023.

Judge Rhys Rowlands granted the pair conditional bail until trial, which he said is expected to last four to five weeks.

Mother admits killing her disabled 16-year-old daughter by allowing her to become morbidly obese

A mother has admitted killing her disabled teenage daughter by allowing her to become morbidly obese.

Kaylea Titford, 16, was found dead at her home in Newtown, Powys, on October 10, 2020, having suffered from health problems linked to her obesity.

Her father Alun Titford, 44, and mother Sarah Lloyd-Jones, 39, were subsequently charged with gross negligence manslaughter and causing or allowing the death of a child or vulnerable person.

Lloyd-Jones changed her plea to admit manslaughter of Kaylea. She admitted breaching the care of duty for her disabled daughter and it was 'reasonably foreseeable' that it gave rise to a serious and obvious risk of death.

Left to die alone like an animal: Parents who left 23-stone disabled daughter to die in her own filth are jailed for total of 13 years as court hears child, 16, begged mother to clean her and screamed for help, but her father told her to 'shut up'

The parents of a 23-stone schoolgirl who was left to die in her own filth during the Covid lockdown have been jailed today for more than 13 years after a court heard how her repeated pleas for help were ignored.

Her father Alun Titford, who will spend seven and a half years behind bars, and mother Sarah Lloyd-Jones, who was sentenced to six years, allowed the 16-year-old's weight to soar and her health to deteriorate as they left her alone in her adapted room.

Titford, 45, and Lloyd-Jones, 40, spent more than £1,000 on takeaways and fizzy drinks in the three months before their daughter's death, but failed to keep her clean and ignored her pleas for help. Asked why he let Kaylea down so badly, her father, who denied manslaughter by gross negligence, told jurors: 'I'm lazy.'

The court heard how Kaylea would scream for assistance, but he would simply text her to tell her to shut up.

The teenager also sent a series of tragic messages to her mother as she pleaded for help to clean her 'leaking legs' and to get rid of 'baby flies' landing on her. Instead, Lloyd-Jones replied: 'For f*** sake.'
