"Sarah Higgins, 42, is accused of inflicting devastating brain injuries on 10-month-old Skyla while caring for the baby at home.

Higgins dialled 999 and told the operator the child had slipped from her arms while being fed and had fallen to floor on to her bottom.

The paramedic is accused of causing the fatal injuries after losing her temper and subjecting the baby to a "non-accidental violent action".

Jurors were told the child's injuries were the type consistent of a child falling from a first-floor window.

Higgins appeared in the dock at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday charged with manslaughter at the start of of a five-week trial.

The court heard Higgins and her husband Martin Dobson, both paramedics, were in the process of adopting Skyla when she died on 26 August, 2017.

Jurors heard a recording of the 999 call Higgins made from her home in Huddersfield, in which she told the operator that the baby was unconscious and unresponsive.

Higgins told the operator she had been struggling to feed Skyla and dropped the child on to a carpeted floor from a low height as she tried to turn her around.

The defendant claimed Skyla had landed on her bottom or lower legs and did not strike her head during the fall.

Skyla was rushed to hospital where she underwent a scan, which revealed bleeding and swelling on the brain.

Prosecutor Richard Wright QC said there were also bruises on the baby's arm that could not be explained by the defendant.

He said doctors also found evidence of bleeding to her eyes, which indicated a severe trauma.

Wright said the baby's injuries clearly indicated that Higgins killed Skyla in a violent assault.

Skyla, who suffered devastating brain injuries, died at Leeds General Infirmary two days later.

Wright told the jury it was the crown's case that Higgins had experienced a "loss of temper".

He added: "Regrettably, that unlawful action caused Skyla's death and so we say that defendant is guilty of manslaughter."

Higgins denies manslaughter."

@sugarcookie your always angry and bitter, You got a big problem
@Sugar Cookie is one of the nicest people here. And we're grateful to her, @Satanica, @Turd Fergusen and the many others that post prolifically because without them, there would be no D'D. If there was no D'D, you wouldn't have a thing to comment ON. So keep being nasty for no reason, or get over whatever trauma is bumming you out and make an attempt to get along, 'K?

@BuffettGirl

I am probably not the nicest.

I just ask for people to stand behind the ratings and comments they give people.

If your reasoning is the perps or the victims that make you angry - all the posts who ever they are by should make you angry.

Unless a person makes a blatant racist comment it is boring and adds nothing to the thread to call people racist.

If I speak negatively on Shitty White Parents , bad behaving White Children I would be racist if I did not do the same to Black Parents and Children.

I acknowledge everyone who rates my posts and make sure to show appreciation to the other thread starter that does the same.

Why can't they just call it murder? Manslaughter implies accidental, and if I lost my shit and killed my neighbor, it'd be murder. So why isn't this? Throw her ass in a hole until she's dead.
Well it is technically 3rd degree homicide.
1st degree murder requires that the killing be intentional AND planned. 2nd degree requires intent to kill but no plan. Non-negligent 3rd degree involves intent to do harm but not kill.
Trying to pin 2nd degree on her would be pretty difficult in this situation.

Sorry But this poor thing looks very much like an ALIEN or MARTIAN or some other creature. Large Bald head, Bloodless with a blank stare. However that gives no one license to smash it into a hard surface. Ms Moron should have just returned poor thing back from where she got it. Then purchased a Beta fish.
So sorry she didn’t have time to grow hair on her precious head before she was murdered.

Women's prisons are by design more pleasant than their male equivalent. Humans place value on others based on aesthetics. Women are the most valuable, followed by children, followed by men, and the least valuable in society are the disabled. Obviously race plays a very important role as well.
So if I’m a disabled woman but not necessarily ugly...where’s that put me? Child? Man and a half?

A paramedic cleared of killing a baby girl she desperately wanted to adopt says she is finally able to grieve for the daughter she lost.
Sarah Higgins, 42, denied the manslaughter of baby Skyla Giller, who she and her partner Martin Dobson were fostering whilst in the adoption process.

Higgins said she and Mr Dobson were happy at finally having a baby after eight unsuccessful rounds of IVF and always claimed Skyla wriggled from her arms. She sobbed with relief in the dock as the jury foreman announced the verdict halfway through the second day of deliberations.
As she left the court she fell into the arms of her partner Martin Dobson, both of them in tears and she wept: 'It's over.' In a statement she said she had escaped a 'terrible miscarriage of justice' and wanted time to recover from the death of the little girl, whom she had re-named Hannah.

'On the 26th August 2017 I lost my beautiful little girl in what has now been recognised to have been a truly tragic accident.

So, those fatal injuries were the result of falling 4 ft onto a carpet surface? In the article she mentions an expert witnesses testimony in her case. Wonder if they still want to adopt a baby?
Well I sure as hell hope they don’t let her. Never in my life heard of a 10 month all dying from slipping out of someone’s arms-and landing on their butt. Jurors were morons.
