A Royal Navy chef who shook his baby girl causing serious brain injuries and then tried to blame his other daughter narrowly avoided jail today.

Oliver Giles, 29, lost his temper and shook five-week-old Emily because she wouldn't stop crying.

She developed a subdural haemorrhage during the assault and had to undergo five operations to drain fluid from the injury.

Giles at first denied causing the injury and tried to blame his three-year-old daughter Olivia by claiming she'd pushed Emily off a chair.

But a court heard the assault happened after Giles's partner Natalie Jarvis had taken Olivia to a birthday party in August 2008.

Giles was yesterday given a 24-week prison sentence suspended for a year at Plymouth Crown Court after previously pleading guilty to child cruelty.

Emily was in hospital for a month and Giles later confessed to police and social services she wouldn't stop crying and he shook her to make her stop.

He told police: 'I lied because I was scared of what would happen to me, but I was wrecking people's lives, my daughters were taken away.'

Giles has continued to see his daughters twice a week under supervision and still works as a Navy chef at Stonehouse Barracks in Plymouth.

He has been in the Navy for nine years and a spokesman said they will provide anger management for him.

Giles was also ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and barred from working with vulnerable children.

Giles's ex-girlfriend described how their daughter Emily was still recovering from her injuries.

Ms Jarvis said: 'We are relieved that this part of the ordeal is over. I cannot explain the trauma that it has put us through over the last five months.

'Now I have to try and rebuild a life for myself and my two children without their father.
[...]

'And one day a beautiful and precious child will ask, "Daddy, why did you hurt me?"

Pouty fucktard Oliver Giles

I'd think that the Navy would want to get rid of these baby murdering types.

I am so glad that she lived. And that she has a real mom who broke up with this baby beating slug.

I pray the child will be able to ask him one day why he hurt her. But, who knows what type of brain damage she suffered from the injuries. It could be years before the full outcome of the trauma is even known, especially because she is still so young. I hope she heals completely!

So true. Aside from all the other reasons it sucks, brain damage is deceptive...especially at that age. My niece was born not breathing, had several seizures and even died once and was brought back. Up until she was about a year old, she did everything a baby her age would/could do...including starting to talk and stand. She is now almost 4-years old and can do neither very well. She has mild cerebral palsy, and she was either 2 or 3 before she was diagnosed, because up until that point she had seemed "normal" (for lack of a better word, please don't think I'm being insulting). She is mentally 4-years old...understands EVERYTHING the way she should, but she is not able to express herself the way that a child her age should, although still always getting the point across. I certainly hope that this scenario does not happen to that child...I agree in the hopes that she'll be able to one day ask him why, since he obviously still feels the need to be a part of her life.

Blames his daughter of 3 yo. wow, he's a pieceofshit. I suspect baby girl will always be scarred on one level or another to one day learn the truth will be the worst of it.

I hope she heals completely and maybe never have to know the truth.
