A former counselor from a Massachusetts school that specializes in educating children with special needs was called into court Monday after allegedly striking a child across the face on Friday.
Steven Adamec, 50, of Attleboro, was arrested Friday at READS Collaborative in Middleborough. Police said they were called to the school at approximately 3:43 p.m.
According to police, they learned that Adamec dragged the student by the arm and pushed him into a door on the way out of a classroom. Adamec then used his left hand to strike the child across the side of their face, police said.
In court Monday, a prosecutor confirmed that another faculty member was the one who called police about the incident and described Adamec's role as an adjustment counselor responsible for working with aggressive or emotional children and de-escalating situations.
The prosecutor also explained the child involved in the incident is on the autism spectrum and that the child was involved in an altercation with another student prior to the incident with Adamec. When reprimanded, the child began to insult Adamec.
"The defendant then told the victim to shut up, got up and grabbed his arms and began to drag the victim out of the room so that the victim's feet were not touching the ground," the prosecutor said.
