Adam Johnson
Detectives investigating the death of Nottingham Panthers ice hockey player Adam Johnson after his throat was slashed with a skate blade have arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter.

Officers confirmed that the suspect has been bailed after being questioned about the circumstances of Johnson’s death on October 28.

Police investigating the “tragic and unprecedented” loss of life had warned that an inquiry would take “some time”.

In a statement on Tuesday, South Yorkshire officers confirmed an arrest had been made. Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall said: “Our investigation launched immediately following this tragedy and we have been carrying out extensive enquiries ever since to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances. We have been speaking to highly specialised experts in their field to assist in our enquiries and continue to work closely with the health and safety department at Sheffield City Council, which is supporting our ongoing investigation.”

Officers said a post-mortem examination confirmed Johnson died as a result of a fatal neck injury.

Officials in the U.K. announced Tuesday that an arrest has been made in the death of Adam Johnson, a 29-year-old hockey player from Hibbing, Minnesota.

While officials haven't confirmed the identity of the suspect, hockey player Matt Petgrave was the skater whose blade cut Adam Johnson's neck during a game last month.

South Yorkshire police later released an update, saying the suspect was released on bail.

A man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson has been told he will not face charges, British prosecutors said Tuesday.

Johnson played for the Nottingham Panthers and died shortly after his neck had been sliced in a collision with Sheffield Steelers defenseman Matt Petgrave during a game on Oct. 28, 2023.
A man was arrested two weeks later and though South Yorkshire Police did not publicly identify him, Petgrave himself said in a crowdfunding appeal for legal fees that he's the subject of a police investigation.
On Tuesday, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided it would not bring criminal charges against the man arrested following what it described as "a shocking and deeply upsetting incident."

"The CPS and South Yorkshire Police have worked closely together to determine whether any criminal charges should be brought against the other ice hockey player involved," Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Michael Quinn said.
"Following a thorough police investigation and a comprehensive review of all the evidence by the CPS, we have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offense and so there will not be a prosecution. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Adam Johnson."
