I think the old man with the gun probably had all he could take of those assholes. Basically bullying him until he exploded, their reaction, or rather non reaction, to him kinda proves they messed with him all the time and was used to him doing nothing. So he surprised them by doing something. I hate a bully and these people were bullies.

I say they went looking for trouble and got it.

Exactly they were bullies and got their kicks out of messing with him and just expecting him to back down as usual, but bullied people do sometimes fight back and sometimes they take it too far because they've been pushed too many times and just can't take it anymore.
