ISLANDTON, S.C. (AP) — A mother and son from a prominent South Carolina legal family were found shot and killed on their family’s land, and authorities said they have made no arrests in the double homicide case.
[....]
Maggie Murdaugh , 52, and her son Paul Murdaugh, 22, were shot several times and their bodies were found near a dog kennel, Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said. How many times they were shot won’t be known until autopsies are conducted later this week, Harvey said.

Paul Murdaugh was awaiting trial on a charge of boating under the influence causing death in a February 2019 crash that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach. The woman’s body was found seven days after the crash.

The wreck led to stories questioning whether his family’s ties to the legal system in the area affected the investigation

Colleton County deputies turned the investigation over to the State Law Enforcement Division, whose agents released no information beyond confirming they were looking into the deaths as a double homicide. They said no arrests had been made.

Beach, Murdaugh and others were aboard a small boat in February 2019 when it slammed into a piling near the Archers Creek Bridge. Beach was thrown into the water. Her body was discovered a week later.

When Port Royal Police got to the crash scene they described the boaters as “grossly intoxicated.”
Murdaugh was indicted months after the incident. The Beach family still has a wrongful death lawsuit pending against the Murdaugh family.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A lawyer from a prominent South Carolina legal family who found his wife and son shot to death at their home three months ago and was injured days ago when a bullet grazed his head as he changed a tire was taking money from his law firm, the business said late Monday.

The statement from PMPED law firm came hours after Alex Murdaugh said he was resigning and entering rehab.

The PMPED law firm said it will hire an accounting firm to fully review its books. It didn't say how much money might be missing, but said Murdaugh was no longer associated with them in any way.

I am super into the case as it has so many layers. This newest twist is a little perplexing because I can’t imagine anyone like AM arranging to survive a bullet wound to the head. It’s too unlikely and the chances of a brain injury are so high, you would have someone shoot your leg or shoulder if it was a set up.

I do think he could have gone to shoot himself and not been fully committed, pulled his head aside at the last moment, and then created the shooting story so he is the permavictim.

Why was he taking such a long, round-about route to his destination? There are a million possible reasons but to set up a private little roadside event seems awfully likely considering that’s what happened.

I did not think AM was behind the murders of his wife and son at first, but now I’m beginning to. Also am paying attention to what information is being shared by his attorney vs law enforcement (for instance, LE has not called AM’s alibi “ironclad” as far as I know - that was a quote/some spin from his lawyer).

Last week, Alex Murdaugh was forced out of the law firm his great-grandfather founded because of allegations of misuse of the firm’s funds.

Maggie Murdaugh, the murdered wife of South Carolina legal scion Alex Murdaugh, had ordered a forensic accounting of her own, in addition to the accounting done by Murdaugh’s law firm that resulted in his sudden resignation the day before he was supposedly shot in the head on a rural road.

Reporter Matt Harris, morning show host on WLNK and host of the podcast “The Murdaugh Family Murders: Impact of Influence,” made the stunning announcement on “Crime Stories with Nancy Grace.”

“That is the word I got from a pretty reliable source,” Harris said. “Maggie hired a forensic accountant.”

A forensic accountant? Hmm.

Seems possible Alex (dad) killed himself when his theft was discovered, but I highly doubt it. These are the kind of people who are used to getting away with white collar crime and probably wouldn't be that bothered by the prospect of court. Although, 1/2 of his immediate family was dead at this point.
If - big if - AM’s gunshot was self-inflicted, I personally doubt it was based in either fear of court or grief re: his dead family members.

Let’s not forget: His father recently died, meaning inheritance stuff is happening with the family money, and AM was up to some very shady financial stuff at his legal firm - the dynasty is about to come crashing down, I suspect, and the shame of that, of not wanting to be seen by his peers and colleagues and neighbors and friends for what he really is, can be a powerful motive for suicidal behavior.

I also think that if the injury was self-inflicted, his brother took the gun away from the scene. I’m just spitballing that but it’s what my gut says

He doesn't really seem like the type to be changing his own flat tire by the side of the road. That was the first red flag for me.
Exactly, that's what AAA is for.

Not dead, the bullet grazed his scalp.

Hampton County Sheriff's Office is now stating Alex Murdaugh did have visible injuries following an alleged murder attempt. The incident report from Saturday originally said police saw "no visible injury" on Murdaugh, after he told authorities he had been shot in the head.
[....]
Murdaugh was transported by air to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia for treatment of what authorities with SLED called a "superficial gunshot wound to the head."

SLED told ABC News 4 Thursday that it stands by its Sept. 5 report of Murdaugh's injury regarding a superficial gunshot wound to the head.

Murdaugh's lawyer, Jim Griffin, said while he did not see the wound with his own eyes, family members described an entry and exit wound to him and advised he has a skull fracture and suffered a minor brain bleed in two places.

According to Griffin, Murdaugh was discharged Monday and did not suffer any debilitating brain injury.

Embattled lawyer Alex Murdaugh allegedly orchestrated his own shooting earlier month as part of an elaborate scheme to leave his son with $10 million in insurance cash, authorities said Tuesday.

Murdaugh admitted the deranged plan to investigators on Monday, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and Curtis Edward Smith, 61, the alleged gunman who conspired with him in the botched suicide attempt, has been arrested.

Curtis Edward Smith, 61, faces charges of assisted suicide, assault and battery, pointing and presenting a firearm, insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud in connection with the case, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
"Richard Alex Murdaugh conspired with Curtis Edward Smith in the area of Old Salkehatchie Road, for the purpose of Mr. Smith assisting Mr. Murdaugh to commit suicide," the affidavit alleges. "Mr. Murdaugh provided Mr. Smith with a firearm and directed Mr. Smith to shoot him in the head for the purpose of causing Mr. Murdaugh's death and allowing for the payment of a stated death benefit."
Police also charged Smith for allegedly selling methamphetamine and possessing marijuana.
