A Greenfield man faces a felony count of child neglect after police say a child under his care was hospitalized with severe burns.
According to court documents, officers with the Greenfield Police Department were dispatched on April 16 to Hancock Regional Hospital to conduct a child neglect investigation. When an officer arrived at the hospital, they learned that an 11-month-old was receiving medical treatment for burns and was awaiting transportation to Peyton Maning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
Police then spoke with the child’s mother, who advised that her boyfriend, who she identified as 23-year-old Eithean Stevens, had been looking after the child while she went to complete a driver’s test. As part of the investigation, officers then followed up at a home located on Pratt Street.
A short time later, Stevens arrived at the home and agreed to speak with officers. He claimed that while he was watching the child, he fell asleep on a couch. When he awoke a short time later, Stevens said the toddler was crying and covered in “crap.”
Stevens said he then removed the child’s diaper and proceeded to give him a bath. He added that he briefly exited the bathroom to retrieve a towel. He recalled hearing the child scream while he was out of the bathroom.
When he returned, Stevens said the toddler was reportedly under the faucet with hot water running. He reported observing the child’s face becoming red and that his skin was “peeling.”
Court documents stated that Stevens told police he applied diaper rash cream, a sippy cup and food in an effort to “soothe” the child. He proceeded to call the child’s mother, who he claimed did not pick up. When questioned on why he didn’t call 911, Stevens said he decided not to because he “thought he would get in trouble.”
