Michigan State Police released an update Thursday regarding the vulnerable woman who was found in Texas Township.

Takai Crute, 22, her mother Angela Crute, 50, and an unknown female boarded a Kalamazoo Metro Transit bus on April 20 around 7:10 a.m., police said.
They got off the bus and walked into the Al Sabo land preserve, according to MSP.
As they entered the wooded area, a maintenance worker saw the women and made contact with them, police said.

Angela told the employee she and her sister were taking Takai for a walk in the land preserve, MSP said.
The worker became suspicious and reported the interaction to the KVCC police, police said.

Officers searched the area but could not find the group, but Takai was found alone by a hiker around 6:40 p.m. the same day, according to police.
Detectives plan to seek vulnerable adult abuse charges against Angela at the completion of their investigation which is close to being done, MSP said.

Police are looking for Angela and the identification of the unknown Black woman, who can be seen wearing a black U.S. Army hoodie during the incident, police said.

So many things I want to say. So many thoughts going through my head right now. I'm finding it all comes back to one thing though. Did the girl understand what her mother was doing to her and the implications of it? In a way part of me hopes that she didn't. To come to the realization that your mother is throwing you away like an unwanted pet. Honest to God that is just mind-blowingly staggering to me

I'm sure she understood mom wasn't there but I suspect mom left her on her own often.

Yeah, sadly (as in many cases of abuse / neglect) this sort of act isn't the abuser's first effort.

Sometimes I think deinstitutionalization never should've happened, to protect vulnerable people like this and the severely mentally ill. And then I think about the rates and types of abuse / neglect common in nursing homes and change my mind again.

Thank goodness for an alert worker reporting the situation. I'm guessing Takai had mobility issues and the worker found "oh just taking her on a little hike" unbelievable. How many cases have been sparked or solved due to some average Joe with a bit of common sense?

Remember when the electrician was briefly a suspect in the Casey Anthony case?

@Burke

I agree where everything you sad - but many people will keep the child/adult, whether they are capable of caring for them, because of pride or the financial incentive.

Disabled adults and children should be required to be seen by a Doctor 2 times a year and quartely by a caseworker to ensure they are safe and healthy.

Deinstitutionalization protects the vulnerable? You'd think institutionalization of the offenders would deter the offenders, but no.
Death penalty doesn't - maybe just dials it down to 'life in hell abuse' for the victim.
Maybe eliminate 'misdemeanor domestic violence'. Make all domestic violence a felony (removes gun possession) with a 360 day stay automatic (coool down & reflection period).

Summary executions!

What started out as a heartbreaking story of abandonment, has turned into a hopeful story of new beginnings.

Takai Crute, 22, who is nonverbal and has special needs, is back in Richmond and surrounded by loving family after her once-distant aunt Kesha Crute fought to bring her home.
“I’m just happy to have her back," Kesha said. "I'm excited, overwhelmed, and just blessed because, as I told you when we spoke before, this could have gone in so many different ways."

Takai was allegedly abandoned by her own mother hundreds of miles away.
“There was no intent for her to make it out," Kesha said.

Takai, who walks with a limp and is unable to care for herself, remained alone in the woods for 12 hours.
Miraculously, a hiker found Takai later that evening and contacted authorities.

“God protected her while she was out there," Kesha said. "She could have lost her footing and fell into the water or been attacked. They have a heavy coyote population, so she could have been attacked by a coyote."
It wasn't until weeks later that Kesha learned what had happened to her niece.

That's when she saw Takai listed as a "living Jane Doe" in local news reports.

Kesha immediately got in touch with Michigan State Police and found out that Takai was in the custody of Adult Protective Services.
She was staying in a group home and was safe and well taken care of, according to Kesha, who visited over the summer and stayed in constant communication with her caretakers.

"The people in Michigan that she encountered were great with her," Kesha said.

Kesha initiated the process of gaining custody through social services and the court system, and months after Takai was abandoned, she officially became a legal guardian.
In September, Kesha trekked up to Michigan once again, but this time, she'd be able to bring Takai home to Virginia.

“I sat in the parking lot when we pulled off and hooked up. I took a picture," Kesha recalled. “And once I took the picture, I started crying. My dad was like, 'Alright baby, get it together, you got to drive us home. And I was like, 'Yeah Dad, I need a moment.' It was just a breath of fresh air. It was the end to that piece of the puzzle and the beginning of a new one.”

Michigan State Police said Angela Crute is still wanted for abuse and neglect of a vulnerable adult. She has not yet been arrested, but police said she is living in Kentucky.
